I've got an old work PC at home running XP. It's nowhere near the router and I don't want wires everywhere. I've looked at WIFI adapters but not really sure what I'm looking at. Can someone point me in the right direction?

If it's not been on the Internet in forever, make sure you're running Service Pack 3 and some form of antivirus *before* you connect it up.
