Just felt what must've been an earthquake, in Cardiff. Whole house shook, and I could feel the pressure wave in my sinuses. But it only lasted a second, which is weird - don't earthquakes normally last ten or more seconds? Seems more like a nearby explosion but I heard nothing except a bit of a whuffle. My daughter was outside and heard a sound she described as like when a big bird takes off near you.

Anyone else?

Felt it in Bristol. Lightly shook the house and knocked a small ornament over. Wondering what it was

so that's what it was!

I was spannering the landrover and couldnt work out what all the unexpected creaking was. Must have been my workshop roof trusses.

Was it really brief or was that just here?

Felt like.when someone slams the front door but much worse. And quieter.

Dislodged a shelf in the bathroom cabinet which resulted in bottles and jars everywhere on opening.

Felt and heard it in Gower...sofa shook, ...like being near a big lorry going too fast over a speedbump.  Was just NE of Swansea apparently, so not far away

Had my hand on the window to close it at the exact time, window honestly shook and central heating pipes rattling like mad, port Talbot, quite relieved it wasn't a terrible explosion in the steel works which is what I thought at the time.

Lasted a couple of seconds...long enough for me to think "why is my sofa wobbling, and what was that noise?"

Had a load of 4.3's here a couple of years back.

Feel them for about 1-2 seconds at that sort of magnitude, but it really depends where you are at the time.  One I was on 3rd floor and it was like a bang, but you could feel the floor still freely oscillate for a few seconds.  Another I was at work, felt it in the office (2 seconds tops), during the lunch break, but half the other guys in the team claim not to have felt anything in a different building (all ground floor).

I'm glad I didn't imagine the house shaking for a couple seconds, I'm in Somerset.

In Swansea,  felt like a massive lorry had driven down the road, but bigger than anything that could possibly be on the roads. It lasted long enough for me to jump up to check that my daughters were ok, get to the bottom of the stairs and stop. A few seconds at most. Curiously, I noticed a while before that all the gulls had disappeared. Normally they are everywhere and you can hear them being noisy - they returned about 20 minutes ago.

The current news is that the centre was about 4 miles north of here, exactly where a lot of mining used to happen. Would have been scary being underground in that

Felt it here in Caerphilly - went out to check none of the neighbours had reversed in the house; quite impressive shake of the house.

Was sat on the loo when I thought a massive lorry went past, lasted about 4 seconds.
My 9 year old son didn't feel anything but he was fixated on the Nintendo switch at the time, the house could be taken away by a tornado and he wouldn't notice.

North Somerset

I was in town at the time, and there’s all sorts of random traffic noise, so never noticed it, probably would have if I’d been at home.
Rather sad I missed it, I did feel one some years ago that was up in Cheshire, I believe, but that was at night when it was quiet. 🙁

Apparently it was felt in Southampton too by some, 1440ish? Didn't feel a thing while doing gentle hill reps...

Last time I can remember feeling a "quake" was ~1984, while living in Dolgellau.

Yep whole house shook, weird creaking noise from the rafters and almost a whoomph through the windows. Thought something had blown up.

Amazingingly baby slept right through!

Pleased to have felt it, last time I was around an earthquake I didn't notice a thing

From Wales Online:

"<span style="font-size: 0.8rem;">The last time Swansea was hit by an earthquake was in 1906, when the 5.2 magnitude Great Swansea Quake sent locals running as far as Merthyr Tydfil."</span>

That's a long way 😀

There was one in the Midlands when I was in school, early 90s, quite dramatic really cos it went on for a good while and knocked a few chimney pots over and put stuff off shelves. However I was outside playing football so didn't feel a thing. Also a tiny one when I was a kid but that was barely perceptible anyway by all accounts.

Glad I finally felt one. But cos it was a single whump I had to run and check the house hadn't been run into or the garage wasn't being ram raided.

Felt it Bristol, thought it was another part of the house falling off. Had a look around to see if any of the cracks had got bigger.

Earthquake? Centred on an area of historic mining?  Odds on its a mine collapse of some sort,  but will never be admitted to as there are probably no records of the mines (or good quality ones anyway) and any damage would fall under the responsibility of the Coal Authority, which obviously won't want to pay out unless they have to!

Odds on its a mine collapse of some sort
The earthquake was 7km deep, which is about 10 times the depth of the Deep Navigation, the deepest mine in S Wales. Magnitude 4.4 is a bit big for a mine collapse as well.

That would be a serious mine to collapse and be felt a hundred miles away.

Today there was a 4.4 magnitude earthquake centred around Swansea. Early estimates are that £1.5m worth of improvements have been caused.

Perditus- where are you? I'm in Garnant. Felt nothing at all which is not surprising because I was driving through Wiltshire at the time. Got home to find that my Lancaster bomber jigsaw was all messy and that a Pritt stick had fallen on the floor.

Yup, tiny bit of a shudder down here in coastal West Dorset. But not that much different to a lorry doing past TBH.

Yeah felt it up in the West Mids, was sat reading at the kitchen table and heard a loud rumble.

Never thought it was a quake though, just assumed large truck going by or neighbours moving something. Wasn’t until I read it later that the penny dropped.

I slept through the great Dudley earthquake of 2002, had a fair bit to drink that night.
