You're losing your touch, Perchy old chap.

Zum Uerige for beer, and a constant stream of leather clad fat German dudes bringing meat based bar snacks.

The Alltstadt has some of the best beer I've ever had.

I'm tired. Futility of modern life and the threat of nuclear war.

Ennui, innit.

Lots of beer halls in the Alt Stadt. All do "old beer" which is a bit darker than standard German Pils, but lovely.
My favourite is Brauerei im Füchschen, they do absolutely fantastic Schweinhaxe (big pork knuckle covered in crackling), get it with either fried potatoes, some dumplings or spaetzle.

Late night food: lots of really good takeaway pizza places in the old town, or a very good pork rotisserie place on the Bolkerstrasse. I think about €3 for half a pig in a bread roll.

If you want more lively nightlife than the beer halls then there are lots of cheesy bar /club places on the Bolkerstrasse, they all kind of merge in to one with seating outside, busy bar then dancefloor out the back or downstairs in the basement. Europop, sticky floors and German stag/hen parties.

If the weather is good then there are lots of bars down on the lower level of the riverside promenade that are a good way to spend time.

There are of course fancy restaurants, trendy bars and clubs, but you can get those anywhere in the world.

If you are going in the next few weeks then there is often some kind of Oktoberfest equivalent set up in the square by the river.

I lived just outside of Dusseldorf for two years, and still visit annually for Xmas markets.

Oooh.... Almost forgot.

The local spirit is called Killepitsch. You can get it in most bars but there is a place on Flinger Str that sells nothing else and is quite an experience.

Tastes a bit like Jagermeister. Not a fan but when in Rome etc.

Sweet baby jesus and the orphans, I swear schweinhaxe is one of the single greatest things I have ever eaten. I visited my sister in D'dorf and we went to one of the beer hall places and she said I should try it. Oh my word. An ENORMOUS piece of pig, and ENORMOUS pile of fried spuds and an ENORMOUS pile of the swwetest, most beautiful red cabbage. I was so full, but I couldn't stop eating...

I had some enjoyable sausage at Curry on Hammer Strasse a week or so ago. More cafe, than restaurant, but very nice and not expensive.

It's a great city, been a few times, best time was during february IIRC, there's a quite bizarre - eurotrash style! - festival, techno and fancy dress in every square, and old birds dressed up provocatively going round kissing anyone suited for work, then snipping their tie off with scissors once the kiss has been delivered. 😆

'Lazos' at the river end of Bolker Strasse does a nice steak, esp with the special Malbec that isn't on the menu 😉

@nobeer that will probably be Karneval. Not unique to Dusseldorf though.

Type "puff Dusseldorf" into Quant/Google and you'll be surprised by the wealth of establishments that provide high quality services for the traveling gentleman. 8)

Dear mods, "puff" in German refers to classy establishments that cater for gentlemen's needs and is not here an insult for effeminate males.

haha - I was in the Zum Schiffchen on Tuesday night eating pig knuckles too! It was bloody excellent! I love eating out in Germany - not entirely sure how good the place would be if I was a vegetarian though...

On a completed unrelated note - if you like cars - try to find time to visit Classic Remise in Dusseldorf - what an amazing place!

Avoid Riva the food and service are okay, but dear god the Italian singer doing the Vic Reeves in the style of a club singer. The Italian in our group said that he was doing traditional songs and then throwing ad lib words in.

Saittavini http://www.saittavini.de/ all I say about the wine is wow.

Brauhas Jon. Albrecht http://duesseldorf.brauhaus-joh-albrecht.de/ mettwurst, bockwurst, bratwurst & Bavarian sausage with sweet & ABB mustard ,
served with mashed potatoes, sauerkraut and a Pretzel was delicious.

The last time we ate out in Germany we ate Afghan. As with eating out in the UK, the best cuisine is foreign.

I have found most foreign food in Germany to be pretty poor, what they do well is decent basic/traditional food (such as that pork knuckle) at a reasonable price with beer.
