I’m working my way through Abbey Road at the moment and all is well until I get to Oh! Darling...I mean, whaaaat is he doing in the lead-ins to the two middle 8’s? Around 1’06 is the first one.

he's a left-handed drummer playing a kit set up for a right hander. He's leading with his left which makes for a distinctive sound

He has a quirky jaunt.

Sounds odd, but I always thought his drumming sort of worked. They might make it big one day...

I find his drumming interesting. I used to believe the “Ringo was a shit drummer.” stuff - until I really listened. His playing of the kit bearing in mind his left-handedness brings something great and I love his fills too.

The Beatles are one of the few groups where you can identify a track from the drum part. Ringo did something distinctive on pretty much every tune, here it's good to concentrate on the drumming as you don't notice how irritating Paul's voice is. Whatever Ringo's doing at 1'06 it's perfectly in time.

^😂 I read the other day that Lennon said he really liked the song but he would have sung it better.
I found a drum tutorial that breaks down Ringo’s part. It boils down to triplet rolls. I might post a link tomorrow.

Ringo’s an excellent drummer, and exactly the right drummer for the Beatles, no matter what Lennon might have said - he was a snarky git.
There is one song on Abbey Road where Ringo is playing the toms with both hands, and McCartney is playing the cymbals, cos Ringo didn’t have enough hands to do it all!
Just listened to part of Oh Darling on the link above - 10CC have some explaining to do...

Something I hadn’t realised until today, ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’, one of my all-time favourite tracks, references the Tibetan Book Of The Dead, it’s mentioned in a review of a new album by Laurie Anderson.

Lennon didn't actually say anything, the "legendary" quote was from a comedy sketch

Oh that bit. Sounds OK to me but then I'm very old and remember the first Beatles album when it came out so there's no hope for me. They were brilliant.

CountZero I had exactly that’ thought- I suppose it counts as a send-up so maybe not plagiarism.

A link to the break-down of what Ringo was doing on Oh Darling. Not easy

Thinking of ringo classics, how about day in the life? I have from a very young age always loved the drumming on that track. Maybe he’s not the best technical drummer that ever took to the stage, and Paul was betterer apparently, but I can think of many guitarists I love that aren’t “perfect”, but just have it. It’s all about the feel, man. I like him.

Paul drummed on Back in the USSR and Dear Prudence and doesn’t disgrace himself but he is not better than Ringo IMO. Listen to “Rain” - also, coincidentally, where Macca’s bass playing explodes into life, probably as a result of getting a better guitar that stayed in tune all the way up the neck.
Please tell me if I am boring you.

Paul was/is a good guitarist too - taxman solo for eg. I take the point that macca accepts ringo is better, but even so, each member of the band contributes their personality and the Beatles nailed that side of things. Even if Paul was better, Ringo was the better fit. Ticket to ride is a strange drum track too, but it’s great imho.

I love Floyd and I wouldn’t want to change the drumming on any of those tracks. Maybe.

@neilthewheel - no chap, far from it, I’m liking the insights and learning stuff 😁

I prefer The Kinks, between the two groups, based purely on my subjective yardsticks so gaining an understanding of the hidden-to-me musicality of The Beatles is changing my perceptions. Thanks. 😁

Some of the Beatles songs I play are in 3/4 time, but a fast 3/4 so you can't dance a waltz to it or even an American waltz (Travailler c'est trop dur by Zachary Richard for example). John and George used 3/4 in a number of songs and sometimes used different time signatures in the same song. Here comes the Sun goes in to 3/4 for the runs down accompanying "sun, sun, sun here it comes" then adds a beat to the next bar (5/4) then a couple of down beats (2/4) - If I keep tapping my foot as I go through 4/4-3/4-5/4-2/4 the down beats on the guitar get out of sync with the foot and then come back into sync, it feels very strange..

Norwegian Wood and You've got to Hide you Love away are 3/4. You often hear people playing Hide your Love away wrong because they've missed the fact the short bridge in the verses is only two bars (six beats) whereas the rest of the song is groups of four or eight bars.

Ringo clattered around seamlessly behind all the changes in time signature - good drummer.
