[Closed] Drive away awning recommendations

We had a Kyham Motordome sleeper(I think that's what it was called)
2nd hand was about £200 that was a few years ago so probably plenty more about for that money.
Was an OK bit of kit. Easy to put up etc.

Oh but don't get the awning, just get the tent. Attaching driveway awnings to a campervan is a waste of time.

Khyam with the easy up type pole arrangement. Amazing. Really a 2 min job to get up and get down. Couldn’t believe it when I first did it. Up in 2 mins. Before I took it down I thought there must be a catch and it was going to take ages to take down. It didn’t, it literally comes down and packs into the case in 2 mins. Putting pegs in/ taking them out is the longest bit of the whole process.

Got ours on eBay 10 yrs ago and it’s done 2 vans so far. Got a hang up bedroom for storing stuff. ( the dog cage used to go in there). Works really well.

Really a 2 min job to get up and get down.

Smart arse.

Khyam is ace. Only downside is it’s packed bulk.
Can be erected/struck single handed as losing as it’s not too breezy, then you’d need a second person to hold it while you open it and peg the corners but it’s mega easy to do which is ace if you intend to move around a lot when touring, means you actually want to use it.

Inflatable so no faf with poles and put up in a few mins and less than half the price of the Khyan models.

Had a khyam, massively disappointed. Quite flimsy and poorly made. It wasn't the easy up ones though. They may be better.

Splashed out on a glawning. Really glad we did. It's bloody brilliant. But out of your budget.

We got one off these from Decathlon for our daughter. Can't fault it so far and that way we can keep her from wanting to go on the camper insurance.
Its also a great gathering place for her mates at race events. She doesn't sleep in it. Sleeps in the van with the bikes.

We did have to buy four big pegs after last year DH at Fort William

I have an Khyam easy up version, it is a bit space hogging when packed up but its a great size for sitting in and storing stuff. It is a bit of a faff to attach to the gutter rail of the van and always used to gather rain so we used to park it separate to the van. If I could post a pic I would, gave up trying circa 2007.

Interestingly, we recently stayed on some sites on Harris where awnings were only allowed if they attached directly to the van. (Our old Decathlon pop-up is a standalone so we couldn't use it).

We're now looking for one that attaches to the van as the old one is bit knackered after 3days of  40+mph winds on Lewis

I have a Vango Airbeam one - I use a metal pole through the sleeve that then attaches to the gutter so it nice and secure. It's survived 50mph gusts - the kind of weather that would shred poled tents. Airbeams are repairable - shredded nylon and snapped poles aren't.

Forgot to say, we've got a hi-roof panel Van conversion.

Tempted by one of these at present, I liked the idea of the decathlon one, but it being pretty much all white puts me off

I also prefer the Airbeam type. I have had one fail - along the stitching on the Airbeam sleeve. Looks like it hadn't been stitched properly. Vango sent me out a replacement sleeve complete with new Airbeam just-in-case.

I've had metal poles fail - in South Uist.

Decathlons new retro look doesn't seem very user friendly Glad we managed to get one of the older coloured ones.

In what way Tracey? Looks really simple in the videos.

Colour wise, I cant see how it can be kept clean in a muddy field. I've seen a couple so far and they seem to be very grubby taking into account its this seasons colour.
I quite like the retro colour but not sure as to how long before it looks well used
