I was hoping to ditch my Camelbak for short rides and start taking a bottle. The problem is I seem to drink 2.5 litres even on a short quick 1 hour ride last night, wasn't a warm evening either.

Am I drinking too much water? I tend to drink a fair amount of water throughout the day (5 litres) (also a lot of tea). I'm wondering if I just think I'm thirsty when I'm not, I did have to stop for a pee even on a 1 hour ride.

How much water would you normally drink on a 1 hour ride?

In a one hour ride I might drain my bottle (0.75 l) if its hot, mid summer.

This time of year I will probably drink half my bottle in hour int eh woods and maybe a couple of sips on the road bike.

I will try and get a pint of water in me before I head out though.

5 litres AND other fluids!?  Are you diabetic (seriously)?

You can drink too much water (<span class="st">Hyponatremia</span>?)

"too" not "to".

I would get my glucose tolerance checked if you are drinking that much water. That's a lot.

This time of year I don't take water (and i don't feel the need to drink either) but in the summer i could manage three litres in a couple of hours.

I'd investigate the diabetic option if it was me.

I would get checked.  My housemate years ago was drinking a lot of water and was then diagnosed with type one diabetes aged about 30. I would drink half a litre max in an hour if not hot weather.

In my experience it might not be too much water if you don't drink enough through the rest of the day. If you're borderline dehydrated most of the time and then do exercise then you'll need to drink more during that exercise.

When I realised that this is what I was doing and started drinking more throughout the day then I got much more thirsty until I became properly hydrated.

I think it's a long-term thing though; it took about 3 months of drinking at least 2l of water every day to bring my water content percentage up to 60% which I'm lead to believe in the healthy level. It's made a difference to all sorts of things including sleeping more soundly / not snoring, weight loss and feeling more alert.

Edit: Ooops I read your post properly now and realise my post is irrelevant! and yeah - 5 litres a day is a lot!

I am a diabetic in remission ....

During by not knowing I was diabetic, and no medication, I was drinking about 4 lts of water a day ... and was permanently thirsty.

Hence I thought I had diabetes ... despite by nice NHS Dr telling me I hadn't, the second one, after a serious kidney infection, told be I probably had been for a few years.

If it is hot i.e. this summer, I can do 2 litres on a 1.5-2 hr ride .... but I do sweat like a pig.  On a one hr ride I usually don't bother to take any .. especially when it is cooler.

Get it checked out now ...

"Drinking a lot of water during the day" can as often be more about habit than need as well.

2.5 litres on an hours ride is, frankly, mental.

Hmm, time to book myself in at the doctors then by the sounds of it. Thanks everyone.

How much water would you normally drink on a 1 hour ride?

Depends, if it is mega warm a full 750ml bottle, maybe 1.25l

Most hour rides though I would take 1/2 a bottle and just take an occasional sip to stop dryness of the mouth.

Unfortunately like others have said you need to get yourself checked out asap.

1hr - would not even both taking water.

+5ltr a DAY - that's a lot. I think I would need a catheter just to get any work done.

Go to the docs as soon as you can.

I'm 43 and was diagnosed as Type 1 Diabetic 3 years ago. one of the main symptoms is a raging thirst.

also a lot of tea

taken from WEBMD:

Caffeine is a diuretic and stimulates urination, and you can actually get dehydrated by drinking too much tea or coffee

I found this when I started commuting a few summers back, I was drinking lots and weeing lots but not really staying hydrated and struggling when looking to put in effort on the commute home for fitness. I actually weened back from 3 cups a morning to 1 and then following some good work by my dentist gave up tea/coffee altogether. I drink less water now and find it easier to hydrate and stay hydrated. Tea is a post ride with cake treat occasionally.

If you go to the Doc's, make sure you get a glucose tolerance test, not just a quick blood test from the practice nurse.

You could even do it yourself with a bottle of Lucozade and a cheap blood sugar monitor.

This. I go through phases of drinking more or less water. At home I'll drink 2-3l a day, but when on holiday that's probably only 1l or so. It takes a few days to adjust, but after that I don't feel particularly thirsty, just pee less.

Apparently it's a hormonal/ kidney thing - the body realises there's less water sloshing about, so releases a hormone to tell the kidneys to stop filtering out so much.

Try cutting back, see how you get on; if you're still feeling massively thirsty after a week of only 2l a day, see someone about it

I'd probably only drink some of a half litre bottle in the weather, so yes get yourself checked.

Caffeine is a diuretic and stimulates urination, and you can actually get dehydrated by drinking too much tea or coffee

I don't think you can, well not drinking normal strength tea anyway. Do your own research but everything comes up with a similar conclusion.

Little update on this. I got my hands on a glucose monitor, after a 9 hour fast my blood sugar measured 4.9. I then had egg on 2 piece of toast and some cookies, an hour after I did it again and it was 5.1, so appears to be normal.

Going to start drinking less water as suggested and see how I get on. I think it may just be habit!

glad that's one thing on the list!  Still worth keeping an eye on things.  Easy thing to keep an eye on is the colour of your urine, if it's colourless, you're as hydrated as you can be.  drink a bit less until you can see a bit of colour, see how much less you're drinking to get there.  You don't want it going dark, but there's a range that's fine.   I'm sure there are medical conditions which complicate this, so it's probably a good idea to keep reading/learning about other explanations, but if you want to experiment with drinking less, this is what you need to be looking at.

I usually don't take water on a standard 1.5/ 2 hour ride (10 - 12 miles, 100ft per mile climbing - longer time usually means more people on the ride and more chatting!)  I'll guzzle a pint of water before I leave.

I'll take a bottle with me if it's hot, or if I know I've not drunk enough that day, or I've spent the afternoon drinking too much coffee.

How long does it take to drink 2.5lt of water through a camelbak nozzle? Just trying to work out what percentage of a ride you have a nipple in your mouth! I suspect Freud would have a few thinks to say about you!

Thanks, I think one of the issues maybe that I'm not sipping when I need drink, I'm drinking quite a bit each time. My urine is usually colourless, over the past few days I've been paying attention to how much I'm drinking and have had around 3 litres each day. My urine has changed to somewhere between pale to bright from that chart. I'll continue to experiment and see how I get on.

The only reason I looked into this is I wanted to start riding without my Camelbak and just a bottle for short rides, that’s when I realised just how much water I drink.
