I'm over 12, so I don't watch the programmes in question, but I don't have a problem with sexuality issues being included in kids' tv

I am more offended by his gratuitous use of spectacles.

Every bloody tv appearence he wears them.

What is he trying to say? Just because you have normal eyesight your not as good as me.

Have you seen how many people are wearing spectacles now a days? It is bloody rampant.

I was on the bus the other day and there, bold as brass, was an advert for glasses. Right there on the bus where anyone could see it.

Well some would have to wear glasses obviously but there not the ones I object to.

It is these namby pampy, wishy washy, left wing liberals who think medically subscribed spectacles are a fashion item.

I have even seen them on children asyoung as 4 years old!

It is obscene and it is all down to Russell 'look at my spectacles' T 'I wear glasses don't you know' Davis.

and breath...

There are two characters in Torchwood who are gay. So? There were three lesbians in Buffy. Again, so?

In my opinion, the ratio of gay/lesbian/black/white/male/female or whatever should be nett neutral. I don't think that either of those two examples show a *generally* fair reflection of the sexuality of a random cross-section of the population. And I was particularly perplexed with the gay kiss scene from Torchwood at the end of the first or second series - it didn't seem to have any bearing on the storyline, other than to say 'look, he's gay, he's kissing another bloke and it's alright kids, why don't you all try it'.

I don't watch it - it looks rubbish - but whats wrong with a kiss on TV between men? Would a man and woman kiss in the same place have been questioned?

I don't care what people get up to sexually as long as everyone involved wants to play (and my wife only plays with me!). I don't get the big deal? Whats wrong with showing people that are gay to kids? Its part of the big wide world they will meet quickly enough growing up and if it seems normal to them for men to kiss men or woman to kiss woman then the worlds a bit of a better place imho.

David.

Absolutely nothing wrong in it at all if it is relevant to the scene and plot.

I just think that any scene, be it of a rape, gay sex, heterosexual sex, murder, torture or whatever should be justified and relevant to the story enveloping it.

In that scene (IIRC) he was jumping back in time then his old boyfriend was randomly there for no reason and they had a long and lingering kiss. There just wasn't a reason within the plot to even have the boyfriend there - it was very odd.

Who are the gay characters in Torchwood? Capt Jack's not gay, in the traditional sense. I don't remember the term, but his sexuality crosses [i]species[/i] boundaries, not just gender.

But that's not new, Capt Kirk often snogged aliens.

Is there any science fiction in existence where there is a romance (as opposed to tentacle rape) between a human being and some sort of revolting blob creature with a really great personality? 🙂

Subtle difference XT..... were your average hetrosexual male be offered a quiet night in with the Torchwood boys I'd venture the offer would be declined, wheras a similar offer from lesbian vampires .....

What is this gay you all speak of,the attraction of same sex couples to have sex with each other,as in the hetro sexual community male v female.

or are the gays you speak of,assaulted, badly beaten or even killed,by men and women who hate and detest the thought of man on man sex, gays who when walking down the street have obscene words shouted at them, who may be followed home, who may suffer blackmail,or discrimination at work, who some people think are child abusers etc.

or are they just fantasy figures, seen in tv programes as always being happy ,affluent and out.

As for kimbers wanting to hit someone who comes onto him, grow up.

Regarding Buffy, none of the lesbian characters were vampires, amazingly. There was Willow, her girlfriend, played by Amber Benson, and one of the other Slayers, towards the end of the series. Thinking about it, I think there was a gay character as well, but it wasn't really made obvious. Just trying to think of any other genre series with obviously gay characters, but can't think of obvious ones at the mo', although I always wondered about Chiana in Farscape... 😉

So, in a show about aliens and time travel 'reality' should be reflected?

The problem i have with Torchwood is that the Captain Jack character is overtly homosexual without it adding anything to the actual script.
It is gratuitous simply because of that fact, if it were an integral part of the plot then that would be fine, as it is it's an irrelevance that simply annoys.*
We get the picture Russel, you are gay you don't need to keep sticking the fact into every other scene in a sci-fi programme!

Don't get me wrong, i couldn't care less whether someone is gay or not, i just find the character bloody annoying because it brings nothing to the script and gets in the way of the story (what there is of it!)

Yeah, and that Welsh bird is overtly heterosexual without it adding anything to the plot! That's just some hetero script editor shoving her sexuality down out throats! Bloody straights.

"What did I say Roy?"

" 'They're all poofs and lezzies!' "

If you know your Fast Show, you'll know the quote. It ain't on youtube - but it should be!

It's not the first time the main character in a sci-fi/fantasy show has had romantic attachments - Kirk with his numerous alien ladies, Buffy with Angel, Riley and Spike, etc - why should it be any different for a show where the main character is bi-sexual?

I thought it was an integral part of Captain Jack's character - that he's a massive flirt, has a roving eye, and gets around a bit. It's a bit like criticising James Bond's womanising as not adding anything to the script. Why's he nobbing that woman when he should be making things explode and using cool gadgets?!

Personally I think we have progressed well as no one is arguing that a gay person could not play an action hero /traditional hard man [pun intended] role as they are too camp / effeminite.

[dick emery voice]Kimbers you are a flirt but I like you [/dick emery voice] 😉

I just don't think his sexuality adds anything to the script - or anyone else for that matter. As part of an unfolding storyline possibly but it is so overt as to actually impede the plot delivery and that i find annoying.
QAF was an entertaining series where the characters sexual lives were intrinsic to the plot, i don't really think it is in Torchwood.

Either that or i find John Barrowman to be one of the most irritatingly smug and up-his-own-arris 'actors' currently around.

Fair play if you think it adds to the overall story, i think it detracts from something that is already weak on plotlines.

There are lots of shows where the sexuality of the characters don't add anything to the plot. They just happen to be heterosexual characters, so it's not commented upon.

In fact, in Torchwood, wasn't it integral to the plot that Ianto fancied Jack, and that Gwen (is that her name? the Welsh lass) fancied Jack, and there needed to be the possibility that it would lead to something, so him banging anything with a pulse was essential to the plot.

Wasn't there some girl-on-girl in Torchwood as well? I have a vague recollection of the Japanese lass getting all sweaty with another girl, but it may just have been my fevered imagination. 😯
Chiana in Farscape was the hottie with grey skin and hair and a lovely bum. The plant girl was the bald one, she used to photosynthesis in a very sexy manner, tho' and pollinating her was just, well...

Perhaps Torchwood was just trying oh-so hard to be a little bit controversial and have a point of difference over Dr Who as it was broadcast later to appeal to a more *mature* audience 'ohh look, two girls snogging - s****'.

And that would make it really lazy script-writing.

Captain Jack is from the 40,s when Homosexuality was illegal and people went to prison for being a practising homo, now 70 years latter,im sure he should be quite qualified.
