Earlier today I was trailbuilding, with my phone in my pocket on loudspeaker, playing some kinda Ninja Tune breakbeat with funky percussion.

Every now and again, there was an eerie addition to the beat which had me doing a few double takes at the astounding acoustics of my phone, which appeared to be creating sounds from the opposite direction, like a ventriloquist throwing their voice.

This phenomenon continued for a while before it dawned on me that there must be a sentient being involved.

That sentient being turned out to be a woodpecker... dunno if it was horny, or if it was just saying 'this is my manor, you slag' in it's own endearing, well, er manner.

Who else has experience of cross species communication?

It’s been noted that starlings can do accurate imitations of phone ring tones, but it’s less common now.
