thinking about getting rid of old PC and going chromebook. Think I have the music sussed from other threads, but what about pics - I have a newish Limix camera which I'll need to be able to download regularly - is this doable with a usb cable like on a pc?

yes, should host the USB data storage no problem.
I really dont think it wont work, but as a back up, theres also an SD slot on the chromebook to sling a card into.
cheers stoner, presumably the pics go straigh into google drive, as minimal storage on the chromebook ?
the "file manager" on chromebook will show local storage and drive storage. You can copy and paste your image files to either. Some chromebooks have larger local storage than others.
You can also upload directly from the connected device to Picasa using the upload link.
