Out of interest, what are the supposed (adverse?) effects of consuming hormone-fed beef

I know it's low-level stuff by Trump standards, but his "victory day" tweet is almost perfect Trump.

1) he doesn't actually know when world war 2 ended, and while telling us all how important is is, declares that "world war 2 victory day" is to be on VE day. Yeah the war in the pacific which was mostly american? The nuking of japan? The literal end of the ****ing war? Never heard of those.

2) Ends Veteran's Day entirely and turns it into WW1 Victory Day. There is now to be no national veteran's celebration at all. (there are no living american ww1 veterans and 99.5% of all american veterans are post-ww2)

3) Quietly takes away the federal holiday for Veteran's Day because "we have too many holidays". There were 12 federal holidays in a year but federal holidays aren't mandatory anyway. Americans have an average of 10 paid working days per year.

Out of interest, what are the supposed (adverse?) effects of consuming hormone-fed beef and/or "chlorinated" chicken? And what sort of volumes of consumption would trigger such effects?

(I eat chicken at least once per week but only eat beef a couple of times per year)

Fill yer boots.

president have a profound effluence on us

Nice work, Ernie, i assume it was deliberate rather than autocorrect. Deserved more recognition.

Sadly I can't claim credit for that. Autocorrect with an apparent political axe to grind and a lack of concentration on my part.

the issue is more that liow welfare standards and higher salmonella rates require the extra chlorine wash

hormone fed beef is about welfare as well, the cows grow quicker and dont graze as much, hormones (its a cocktail of 6 that are given) can increase cancer risk tho levels are low.

there was a very good breakdown on the bbc about much lower welfare pork standards in the USA, and their reliance on antibiotics because of the increased diseased risk

Yes, they will appease us by clearly labelling it, but it will still be cheap so the poor will not have a choice and it will negatively affect their health, as so many things do.  Also, restaurants will buy it and feed it to us without labelling it. Nandos and KFC will

the cheaper lower welfare and cholrinated chicken etc is not allowed as part of this deal

actually this is just the outline of a deal with very little detail.

Starter says we will not be lowering food standards and he knows if we do any deal with the EU becomes impossible

the US side we will take their frankenbeef.

The devil is in the detail and no details have been negotiated

This should perhaps be on the Pope thread but there are some proper little gems about MAGA supporters such as

'Woke pope,' screams the MAGA crowd. Apparently, Jesus' own teachings go too far.

And

the right-wing loon-o-sphere

I've never heard of the loon-o-sphere before but I love it 🙂

What does it say to you........ that the United States and its president have a profound effluence on us and the rest of the world?

That, and one man's capricious whims.

Power should be subject to checks, balances and a sense of Noblesse oblige, as the English say

Here’s a good one missed whilst everyone’s distracted over the no-deal.

White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller said Friday that the Trump administration is "actively looking at" suspending habeas corpus, the right of a person to challenge their detention in court.

https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wh-trump-suspending-habeas-corpus/story?id=121653587

Miller justified the potential suspension of habeas corpus by arguing the United States is currently facing a national security threat by undocumented migrants "invading" the United States.

TJ+1 (I keep agreeing with you 🙂 )

The U.S.-UK Economic Prosperity Deal is an agreement to negotiate and isn't legally binding. Full deal here

Wowsers

https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/trump-administration-poised-accept-palace-sky-gift-trump/story?id=121680511

The highly unusual -- unprecedented -- arrangement is sure to raise questions about whether it is legal for the Trump administration, and ultimately, the Trump presidential library foundation, to accept such a valuable gift from a foreign power.

Anticipating those questions, sources told ABC News that lawyers for the White House counsel's office and the Department of Justice drafted an analysis for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth concluding that is legal for the Department of Defense to accept the aircraft as a gift and later turn it over to the Trump library, and that it does not violate laws against bribery or the Constitution's prohibition (the emoluments clause) of any U.S. government official accepting gifts "from any King, Prince or foreign State."

The Alasdair Campbell / Rory Stewart "Leading" interview with Michael Wolff was superb, he really explains well what Trump is about (Spoiler: Trumps is self serving, thick, headline grabber with zero strategic thinking).

So Trump's not allowed to accept gifts, but the Pentagon is allowed to accept gifts (that Trump can use however he likes while president, with a built in clause that he'll get them to keep after being president).

I'll remember that this is perfectly legal when next doing my taxes 😁

This is the part I do not get about the plane story. What kind of library do these people have?

"According to CBS News, the BBC's news partner in America, the plane would be donated to Trump's presidential library at the end of his term."

and

"Air Force One planes usually carry over to other administrations. According to the National Archives, only the Reagan presidential library has an Air Force One jet, and it flew seven presidents before being donated."

My cousin was working for a mobile library for a couple of years, basically driving around between different villages so kids could borrow books.

I assume it'll be like that, only way more polluting. And no books, just golf magazines and porn.

Has CNN allowed themselves to be utterly ****ed up the arse by the Trump crowd?, their reporting on the tariff negotiations below is utter nonsensical and could just as easily be a Trump press release

That kind of thinking is very 2016. That this a blip for the USA. A period soon to be looked back on as a crazy misstep. I fear it’s a change for the long term, and its effects will be long lasting across the world.

It's the obvious state of the guy, I watched some of the "presser" over the plane thing and he's like a precocious 7 year hyped up on Sunny D.  Nothing makes any sense and he's happy so long as he can just keep talking.  It really doesn't matter what comes out of his mouth.

I made the mistake of clicking on one of his interviews on FB recently, so now I’m bombarded with his lunacy. When you look into it, it’s far worse than the news channels report, his, and his cohorts, interviews are total madness, with no grounding of truth. The idiot drugs rep last week who told him he’d saved 250 million lives in 3 months, yet there are only 300million people in the USA. Senators, who 6 months ago were saying “X/Y/Z is a brilliant thing, we need it” then now saying the opposite, and denying they ever said it. Trump saying Canada is a small buyer of USA goods, yet figures show they are the biggest buyer of USA goods. It goes on. Luckily, from what I’ve seen, many more people are calling out their lies and pathetic plans.

Oh, and 59 repressed white people from South Africa were been given refugee status yesterday, and picked up by the USA. Strange that. They’ve said no more immigrants, yet they have taken these people in, supposedly without much questioning.

I don't think the US has ever been a stable place.  First it was a money making scheme based on rapacious colonialism, then the shit hit the fan, then there was a brief interlude of socialist nation building which was gradually forgotten when the money started rolling in after WW2, then the second lot of neoliberal shit hit the fan and we are now catching up with that.

I hate agreeing with Trump but South African farmers are being killed at a rate that could be called genocidal. Whether they are entitled to the land they are on is another story but without farmers there is no food.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-41807642

I don't know if these 59 people were farmers or not but I think it's a bit harsh to assume that people who look fairly young were part of the Apartheid regime since that was 30 years ago. They may have parents who like me grew up in the Apartheid era and may be influenced by it. But I know I was one of many white Saffers who took part in anti apartheid demonstrations when I was at Uni. Don't tar us all with the same brush.

You could argue that 74 people per year being killed is genocidal, but then others may just think you’re being a tad melodramatic when in other parts of the world not too far away 2million are being held in a concentration camp and killed on an industrial scale.

A more recent article here;

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/crljn5046epo

While black South Africans make up more than 90% of the population, they only hold 4% of all privately owned land, according to a 2017 report.”

Figures from the South African police show that in 2024, 44 murders were recorded on farms and smaller plots of agricultural land, with eight of those killed being farmers.”

Like **** it’s a genocide, just the usual convenient dog whistle to those with the comprehension skills of a turnip

I know that I should be disaproving and tut at the very thought of having a mobile Maccy D's following you around, but I have to admit that I'm actually quite jealous.

If I win the lottery I'm definitely having a mobile Greggs accompany me everywhere I go

Their words not mine.  I agree its' nowhere near genocide but it is a huge problem with a huge number of farmer having been killed since the end of apartheid.Figures show that attacks have decreased in recent years though.

While you are entitled to your opinion, and I welcome robust dicussion but I would ask you to keep it civil and not resort to derogatory name calling and insults. Thank you

I saw this post on the Elon Musk thread and I honestly hadn't made the connection. I should have knowing EM is South African. So maybe that's the only reason Trump was bringing up the Farm murders. Grifting Elon.

Meanwhile, he's continuing to undermine the Police (never thought I'd hear myself defending the US Police),  the Supreme Court has removed protections for 350,000 Venezuelans and the head of CBS has stood down after a dispute with Trump.
