If you're still considering a trip to the US (yes, who'd be mad enough, eh?), make sure you log out of your social media unless you're a Trump fan...

I honestly would martyr my trip so I could make a story out of it to use against the regime.  At least, if it were a business trip.  I'm not sure I'd be planning a personal trip.

It was reported as a random check, they have the powers to look at that stuff at the border. Not entirely surprising to find a European with a highly negative view of Trump, I guess.

just seen this on my FB feed, seems the UK Subs also fallen foul of the same thing....

Much though I'd like to believe that the US has completely lost its shit and is turning away people for not liking their new dictator I suspect that there's a little more to it that that - after all probably most of the foreign nationals on that flight think he is crazy and some will have said so publicly...  So I suspect he went a bit beyond the usual:

Another AFP source said that US authorities accused the French researcher of “hateful and conspiratorial messages”. He was reportedly also informed of an FBI investigation, but told that “charges were dropped” before being expelled.

We prosecute people in this country for hateful or threatening posts about politicians even if they were never intended to be be followed through.

The government are using AI to revoke visas so it is not a massive stretch to also understand that they may be also using that same process to vet incoming visa entries to the states.

I can well believe that although if this was the case here it obviously wasn't a random search as claimed. Tbh I unless the unnamed scientist's phone and laptop were filled with hatred directed at Trump I am struggling to believe that this was a random search. Apparently the scientist's phone and laptop were confiscated and not returned.

Given that I've called for someone to line up trump and all the trump acolytes around him on his twitter feed and shoot them all probably means I'm not ever getting into the states, not that I ever leave the house these days so of all the places I'd previously love to visit I place America right at the bottom, with the bottom feeders.

Depends what you've posted on Socials I suspect.  You've been asked for social media usernames on ESTA applications for a few years already, but it is/was voluntary.  I have put my instagram handle in and left off twitter etc.

When I visited the US during Trump 1, I did uninstall Twitter and removed the saved password from my phone.

That being said I was just notified my ESTA is due to expire, can't say I'm in a hurry to head to the US.

I have been hoping to go to New York to visit my late partner’s sister and brother in law, but considering the amount of trolling I’ve been doing on various socials I might need to rethink that idea. Or just delete the apps off my phone, ‘cos I wouldn’t be taking my pad with me.
I might have to hide or delete all of the screenshots taking the piss out of Diaper Don, though.

New York Times reporting that the Pentagon is due to brief - checks notes - Elon Musk on its plans if they go to war with China.

An unelected, unstable billionaire whose role is to make savings is going to be told what the nations war plans are? Is he going to go back to Donald with his DOGE hat on and say, "this isn't cost effective,  we should scrap the Pentagon and just surrender?"

No matter how much jingoistic, nationalist, aggressive rhetoric all the MAGA (and Brexity in the UK) types come out with, they're all the same.

Thin skinned snowflakes who want to intimidate because they haven't got the brains to think up a witty riposte.

An unelected, unstable billionaire

Who has connections and significant business relationships that rely on the good favour of the People's Republic of China.

Unless they are aiming to feed false intel directly to Beijing, this doesn't seem like the wisest move. But nothing surprises me any more.

TBH, it used to be a thing after 9/11. Never take your phone or laptop with you to the US.

Our US parent company would provide one for you when you got there. First job on arriving in their office was to boot up and log in on a wired connection and then wait an hour while everything synced.

First time it became a problem was when one of our expedition teams were stopped at JFK and had a dozen laptops, ~20 phones (personal and company) plus about £100000 worth of test equipment seized. All of it officially checked in correctly with all the documentation and permits in place, everyone had the right visas and passports and so on. Took about a year to get any of it back. And the test cars sat on the dock for 6 months until we could get them shipped back.

Except education policy/curriculum is nearly all state or county level. So this isn't going to do what is claimed? Quelle surprise!  It will be when they start going for that lower level.

Some interesting footage on social media of some of those Republican "town hall" events where Senators and Congress(wo)men meet the public. There's a lot of grassroots push back on Trump and his politics that we aren't seeing in the UK.

That might just be my media bubble, presumably other clips of people worshipping the deer leader and saluting like crazy are available.

I don't see what is so strange about the United States becoming a member of the Commonwealth of Nations other than the obvious fact that the United States would want to dominate any international organisation which it is a member of.

But if the Commonwealth is to exist at all, and presumably the governments of 56 countries believe it should, then why shouldn't the United States be a member?

It sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Certainly no less reasonable than countries such as Canada and India being members. There is probably a debate to be had on whether there is any point to the Commonwealth at all but that's another issue imo and not one which seems to concern many Commonwealth countries.

I’ve got sort-of family (my late partner’s sister and brother in law) in New York, and I’d love to go over and visit them, but considering how much I’ve been shit-posting Elonia and Diaper Don on Xitter there’s no way I’d take my phone with me; I’d buy an older second hand iPhone and a cheap SIM and load it with the bare minimum to enable me to keep in touch with them, and whatever useful maps and use it like a burner phone. I wouldn’t even link it to my photos or anything apart from my music and books - it seems like even mentioning The Donald in anything other than glowing terms will get you arrested and put into detention! Can we say dystopian, children? I think we can.
I wouldn’t want to risk any shit going their way, considering the nature of the jobs they have, and how long they’ve lived there, I don’t know their citizenship status, although even having a green card seems to offer no protection from deportation, or the threat of it now. 🤬😖

If I lived near to his golf courses, I’d be there at night with cans of weed killer drawing huge cock and balls, and ‘Trump is a c***’ on every green, big enough to show up on satellite photos. Sowing all the greens with salt would be a good alternative.

That article has this gem right at the bottom. There's a load of pro-Russian bullshit from Witkoff but this stood out:

There is this sort of notion that we have all got to be like Winston Churchill. Russians are going to march across Europe. That is preposterous by the way. We have something called Nato that we did not have in World War Two."

He and his friends are doing all they can to kill NATO.

Interesting one

A certain section 6(b) tucked into an executive order  that was issued day 1,is making people wonder whether the Insurrection  Act is going to be triggered

https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/declaring-a-national-emergency-at-the-southern-border-of-the-united-states/

DECLARING A NATIONAL EMERGENCY AT THE SOUTHERN BORDER OF THE UNITED STATES

America’s sovereignty is under attack.  Our southern border is overrun by cartels, criminal gangs, known terrorists, human traffickers, smugglers, unvetted military-age males from foreign adversaries, and illicit narcotics that harm Americans, including America.

Sec. 6.  Reporting Requirement.  (a)  Within 30 days of the date of this proclamation, the Secretary of Defense shall submit to the President, through the Homeland Security Advisor, a report outlining all actions taken to fulfill the requirements and objectives of this proclamation; and

(b)  Within 90 days of the date of this proclamation, the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of Homeland Security shall submit a joint report to the President about the conditions at the southern border of the United States and any recommendations regarding additional actions that may be necessary to obtain complete operational control of the southern border, including whether to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807.

Hard to tell if it’s the tin foil hat brigade or something being set up.

I think so, yes:

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/insurrection

Not that that will stop the republicans using words to mean one thing, that really mean something else...

I mean just look at the lanuage trump is using against people who vandalize Tesla cars... "Domestic terrorism" urm ok then... But when a citizen shoots up a school and kills a bunch of kids, thats just 'unfortunate'? "thoughts and prayers", etc. 🤪

Not necessarily according to the Trump administration. Trump has declared a state of emergency at the southern border and instructed that the relevant authorities secure it within a specific time frame.

I think Trump is suggesting that non compliance of his executive order would authorise him to use additional presidential powers under the Insurrection Act of 1807.

At least that's how I am seeing it.

The Yemen texts are interesting in that they show how Putin’s aim of a weakened Europe is being progressed by Vance’s loathing of Europe. It’s difficult to see the Trump administration as allies.

Vance’s loathing of Europe

There's a deep dive on Vance on the Time's podcast here:

They seem to think that Vance is quite fond of Europe in a likes going on holiday there sense, but not paying for its security, and that everything here has gone to shit. He's also a fan of Charles de Gaulle of all people 🤷‍♂️

Wonder when the first Judges and reporters are going hit El Salvador.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out as there’s very little info available on how these people were selected/rounded up other than tats and being Venezuelan, but they have been effectively imprisoned in another country without any representation, judge or jury and it has happened.

And this little doozy,

Stephen Miller told reporters at the White House on Wednesday that the Trump Administration didn’t need to wait for a crime to be committed before deporting someone. “Our job is to send the terrorists out before anyone else gets raped or murdered,” Miller said.

It wasn’t a failed attempt like the UK-Rwanda plan they have literally just actioned it without any notice.

I wonder what other shocks are in the pipeline.

Vance’s loathing of Europe

I think he’s just lining up the next bogey man for when he takes over from trump.

Be interesting who gets the blame and fired for the Atlantic gaff.

The Atlantic for posting fake news obviously 🙁

I think for the first time in I'm feeling that in reality (as opposed to "if this carries on like this then there's the possibility") that the post war settlement has finally - and perhaps permanently cracked, and its every country for itself again.

Aye. Over here in NL we've been officially advised to keep three days' worth of food and water on hand, plus all the batteries and power banks topped up. Depressing.

Yep never know when the ‘Mericans  are going to invade.

Which wasn’t a thing last year, whereas now a join up with the Russians wouldn’t be a surprise.

“Our job is to send the terrorists out before anyone else gets raped or murdered,”

Thank god that they all ticked the "terrorist" box on the entry form and so can be easily identified.

With regards to rape. Given the number of sexual offenders associated with the Trump white house perhaps they should start there?
