And the yeehaa Yankee Doodle wanchors demanded that Canada reduce/stop using French language in tv broadcasts

They wanted to end the need to comply with dual-language requirements on advertising and labeling, the haven't sought to end French language 'TV broadcasts' let's not fall into the trap of hyperbole in the same way that the right do, eh?

Perhaps I should have paid attention to the radio, but in my defence I was running 2kg of cheap Aldi beans through my new grinder to season/clean the burrs and it was quite noisy.

Next time please comment on such a correction with a rather less patronising tone.....eh? 😉

The ironic one was the extension to patents on pharmaceuticals.  Ironic because Lilly makes an absolute killing off the sales of insulin, a Canadian invention given away for free.

The long term impacts of this will be interesting.  The longer it goes on, the more deals Canada makes with China, and the harder it will be for America to stomach returning to the old free trade agreements.  For example there was mostly free trade in automotive components, trucks, cars etc.  That was all written up in the era of Ford, Doge, Chrysler etc so you could have a truck built on an assembly line in Detroit, from parts made in Ontario, with an engine from Mexico and then sell it in anywhere in North America.  But by the time Trump leaves the White House Canada will have plants assembling electric cars from parts made in China using raw materials exported from Canada. How do you then go about returning to business as normal?

I genuinely cannot tell if this is serious or not.

As with Brexit, the hard-of-thinking don't care as long as they get to wave their little flags, but those with anything between their ears know that the massive long-term economic damage will be irreversible.

I read an interesting* paper over the weekend that sought to explain Boomer/Gen X voting decisions using the J curve model that James Davies created to explain revolutions. They're voting for extreme parties because they feel intensely threatened by modern economic stagnation, inflation, or shifting societal resource allocations. When these high-asset or formerly high-growth groups feel their expected trajectory is thwarted, the model suggests they turn to anti-status-quo or populist/extreme political choices to recover or protect what they feel they are being deprived of, despite being the richest group of humans to have ever existed.

* YMMV Here's the link to the wiki article

Slightly serious, 🤨.

For the sake of £10/kg of Aldi's espresso blend beans and £10/kg Aldi's medium roast beans it's worth it.

It "may" reduce static cling, It "may" help bed the conical burrs in, It "may" help to stabilise the grind consistency.

But really......I was rather keen to experiment with settings on my new grinder as it has 19 grind settings with an 8 step/0.01mm adjustment for each setting whilst using cheap £2.50 bags of 250g coffee beans rather than my usual £8+ bag of 250g coffee beans, Both near neighbours, mum, aunt, brother and best mate and son all got a nice bag of freshly ground coffee, specifically ground for their cafetière/pour over use or their aero press use or their Espresso machine use and from initial incoming early morning reports I have to say they are very impressed - so I now have a datum point regarding grind setting for those beans if they ask for some freshly ground coffee in the future. - everyone is happy and had a splendid start to their Tuesday morning for the sake of £20 of coffee beans.

So there, not entirely serious, but still informative and very worthwhile experience for myself.

That's not me..?

Look, I know that jokes aren't funny when you have to explain them, but Canadians (traditional joke) say "eh" at the end of every sentence...Read it like that, eh?

Its time the entire world (most of us) told the yanks to just **** off and do one

This is a joke.

- Are you and everyone you know and the entire country going to give up using Google?

- Are you and everyone you know and the entire country going to give up using Outlook?

- Are you and everyone you know and the entire country going to give up using Windows?

- Are you and everyone you know and the entire country going to give up using Word/Excel/Powerpoint

- Are you and everyone you know and the entire country going to give up using Amazon and/or AWS?

- Are you and everyone you know and the entire country going to give up using YouTube?

- Is your precious NHS going to give up using Palantir?

No, thought not.

We're not going to tell the Yanks to "do" anything, and we should instead apologize to Trump and hand over Greenland to him. And also demolish all those wind turbines that spoil the view from his delightful golf course.

With the proviso that, like you said, probably not...

1. Please

2. Several better alternatives exist

3. Unlikely, but opensource alternatives exist for most use cases

4. See above, momentum and business/enterprise drives continued use

5. EU sovriegn cloud exists, but AWS/Azure/GCP/etc have critical mass. Hybrid/private cloud is a far better choice for some workloads, but AWS makes things easier and cheaper(?!!) for businesses that can't face the CAPEX of self-hosting

6. Nope, but given the AI slop and ad riddled BS that infests it now, maybe they should

7. I sincerely hope so.

The “you can temper” was my initial opening response to  “I genuinely cannot tell if this is serious or not.” as in “you can temper the burrs before beginning to experiment with grinds” but deleted it and it appeared that I did not delete the entire remark, my fault for not checking and I edited my post immediately.

Eh, may be a normal inclusion that I expect to hear from my aunt when she comes over from Nova Scotia as she’s lived over there for 45 years but reading it as a response on here with such context has the potential to be rather demanding as the meaning of “eh?” depends on vocal intonation and whether or not you use a rising pitch - turning a statement into a question, or a falling pitch engenders a shared assumption.

I’m away, got a hot date with a grinder, 😉

Trump - as he has the mentality of a child - is now saying he's going to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America, so there!

In return, Canada has threatened to cut off the power to the 1.5 million homes in North America which it presently supplies

Hmmmmm

There's more..

“‘Lake of America’ was something I’ve been thinking about for a long time,” Trump said from the Oval Office. “We have a gulf and we have a lake. Now, all we need is an ocean. So, maybe we’ll have to change the name of the Atlantic and/or the Pacific. Maybe we’ll change them both.”

I've finally got a solution to all this mess. Let's just rename the Earth, America. **** it. I don't care anymore. America can't go to war with itself right? Oh wait. Balls.

All the sideshow shit doesn't matter. I would like to see far less of this drivel reported, it plays right into his hands.

Unfortunately he still wields immense power so really can't be just ignored.

The ‘Merican population with their 27 litre V8 pick-ups, which do 4mpg, are paying 45% more for their ‘gas’ since that demented orange nobhead started a war that everyone told him not too, that he now can’t get out of.

I don’t think randomly renaming a stretch of water is at the forefront of their concerns

He's more of a Macdonalds man, but I know what you mean.

I do wonder how quickly all of these names will revert after he has gone though. Would a more sensible/less insane leader just apologise and quietly revert them, or shrug and say "well, it's done now so may as well keep it like that"?

I don't like to credit him with the intelligence or sense of humour, but surely he's just trolling now. Isn't this part of the 'owning the libs' agenda?

'Haha, look at all those libs crying about us renaming the Atlantic while we continue lining our pockets and waging illegal wars' etc. etc.

He possesses not the slightest trace of either. He really is genuinely a complete moron and the only thing he laughs at is performative cruelty. Statements like this are literally just a steam of consciousness that's blurted out as the two remaining brain cells he possesses bump into each other.

What is terrifying is reading the comments on Fox News etc of him saying it. The MAGA lot all absolutely love this shit!

I think you just have to accept that he lives in a bubble of people who either genuinely share his beliefs or are just sucking up to power.  I don't think he's any different away from the cameras.

Which is why he get's so upset when something pierces that bubble.  He can't comprehend a world where people don't like his tariffs, ICE, wars, walls, weird obsession with the Kennedy center, etc.  How can people be so upset at having to spend an extra £20 on a tank of fuel?  Don't they appreciate how hard he's working on this war that he's convinced he's winning?

I was reading an article this morning (in The Atlantic) saying exactly that. Because he's completely surrounded by sycophants and yes men, constantly telling him how great he is and how everyone loves him, he's now completely detached from reality and has absolutely zero grasp on the true feeling in the country, the vast majority of which think he's a ****.

This is about to backfire pretty spectacularly for the Republicans because, as the mid-terms elections approach, he's now saying that he wants to put himself front and centre of all the campaigning. He's doing this because he believes all the brown-nosing guff his toadies are telling him, so obviously making it all about him is sure to be a roaring success, right?

If they lose both houses because of this, then there's a certain poetic justice for the idiots who put him there

Which could "partly" explain why he thinks elections are stolen from him.

I enjoyed Carney's response:

We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms.

Trump is such that I can't help but cheer his adversaries, despite the fact some of them probably likely will not contribute to the betterment of the world to the extent that we need.

I read that and thought "Mark Carney's not such a bad chap..." then realised what you meant.

We should probably take a moment to quietly compare the insanity of the Tango Fascist and his cabinet of right-wing nutcases and the regimes of places like Iran and Russia.

I know, it's a toughie.

‘Lake of America’

In all honesty they can call it whatever they want from the American perspective.

So Lake Ontario can be from the American side Lake America, but it will still be from the Canadian side(and probably the American states around it, Lake Ontario.

A bit like the English channel.

We call it that, but the The French name for the English Channel is La Manche, which literally translates to "the sleeve.
