Replacement car key

We have just bought a car for our daughters to learn to drive in and it only came with one key – can anyone recommend somewhere that can cut a replacement key, along with the remote locking fob. We have the original 'code card' with the unique serial number for the key.

Timpsons made me a copy for about £25, they've got a machine to copy the chip for immobiliser too. No remote fob though, but that's not really essential, especially for a spare key.

Not all Timpsons do it but they are a good first start, where are you based as I use a local locksmith so you might have someone nearby? £70 for a Hyundai key was the last one.

I'm in Harrogate - we have a Timpson's I could bob into – was just wondering if there was a better option.

And would really like to have two proper keys with remote fobs so both my daughters can have their 'own' key. I know it's silly, as only one can drive it at a time, but it's their first car and they are excited.

Take the remote key fob off the current key.

Give them both a key. Problem solved.

one thing thats worth while checking out- can you park at the Timpsons - they're traditionally a fixture on high streets but popping more often as concessions in supermarkets. Sometimes you need the car to be present so it can be paired with the key but most Timpsons shops are one man bands and can't leave the shop to do that unless you're able to park right outside.

It's a quite a simple job unless you have a particularly modern / fancy key.

Search for a mobile auto lock smith that covers the area you live in.  Or check your local Timpsons, I used to live near one that could do remote keys too or your local hardware key cutting type place, a few can also do car keys.

I used a AA auto locksmith about 5 years ago, came to my work place and did it in the car park in about 30mins.  Cost £70 for new remote key; new key black cut to correct profile and immobiliser and remote buttons fully programmed.

You need to be really careful searching for mobile locksmiths, it's a real cowboy industry, plenty of horror tales abound. Make sure it's not being farmed out from a call centre to a local and ascertain exactly how much you will pay and what that will get you.

Auto Discount on Regent Parade can provide complete keys including the remotes *I think*

Depends very much on the age, make and model of car.

I looked into this for a 13 plate BMW for my son and it was £300+ from the main dealer or £250 for someone to come and cut/code it but involved dismantling part of the dash. I was going to go the main dealer route, but we ended up selling it before I got around to it.

The short term mitigation was to stick an airtag on the key ring to reduce the risk of losing it.

When I worked for SFS/Cazoo, all keys had to be labelled with the car make, model and the location it was parked in, many cars keys cost north of £250-350 to replace, so we had to be very careful when moving cars around.

What was problematic was quite a few lease cars were delivered with just one key… 😖
