Only Big Bruce can save us now
2.7% chance of the rock hitting Earth
Is that a high probability then?
In NEO terms, yes; quite high.
Similar odds to winning a tenner on the lotto.
What if you don't do the lotto?
What i you don't believe in asteroids?
A small red cross?
Then you've saved a pound you can spend on crisps.

Que?
I believe in assteroids, but I have been to the doctors and have some cream for that now.
I would do it if asked.
1983 Asteroids pub champion 🙂
Edit > this^^ was meant to go under Binners post < 😉
My new Mayan calendar that I got for Christmas continues well beyond 2030 so it will all be OK.
no need to que - there'll be enough for everyone 😉Que?
I think the biggest issue is, bruce'll be dead by then.
Ms orena45 and I watched the film 'Melancholia' last week, not really knowing what it was about. Most depressing film ever...and this news comes along 😯
The sun is smiling
Thanks piemonster
😥Number of Potential Impacts 19
They estimated the risk of impact to be 2.7% in 2004, that same afternoon, in 2004 the same scientists revised their prediction to 0.0004%.

Ben Affleck is our only hope then.
Nnnnninteen..?
I remember a song about that, perhaps we could change the lyrics from that of a Vietnam tragedy to an Asteroid tragedy..

thats a bit worrying - I have won £10 on three occasions in the last 12-14months 😯
Meh, its only 270m across so a really bad day rather than the end of the world then.
Kryton57 - MemberI think the biggest issue is, bruce'll be dead by then.
We could always pack up Chris Jones and his acolytes onto a shuttle with their impressive armoury and they can then prevent the asteroid from removing their right to have bare arms. (probably be a bit chilly)
Who took that photo? Has it happened before?

I took it as I left my Home World, just before it went FA-DOOM!

Apparantly revised to 325m. Also its spinning which like the effect of rifling in a gun, increases its speed and accuracy 😯

Hip hip hip hooray?
What tyres - or indeed wheel size for post-apocalyptic riding?
It's all to do with the tracking accuracy and path extrapolation errors. And then they run a closest-point-of-approach function to look for near-intersections of the paths.
The orbit of the Earth is well modelled but that of asteroids is less so, even though they track and plot all the main collision candidates. The further forward in time one extrapolates the path, the greater the error bars. As we get closer to 2030 with better tracking, the calculations get more accurate. But the calculated risk of an intersection can go up or down.
That's about 10 Tsar bombs of energy! All pointing at the ground...
Wow Buzz. You really are a Space Ranger.
STW standards slipping.........
30-odd posts in an no-one has asked what tyres for
a. riding like billy-o to escape impending doom.
b. hucking big drops off the resulting crater
edit - bugger - seems someone else was tying at the same time as me!! 😳
I shall be leaving Earth on special spaceship going to prepare a new planet before then. All the the important skills will on the ship, hairdressers and estate agents etc. Apparently this asteroid thing is really a Vogon spaceship that is clearing a path for a new super space highway. You have been warned.
42 by the way.

F[s]l[/s]at bike?
36er ?
I don't understand this bit...
...predicted a 2.7% chance of the rock hitting Earth when it passes within 22,364 miles of our planet...
So is it going to hit us or pass within 22,364 miles ?
I realise 0 miles is "within 22.364 miles", but I don't understand how the risk of collision is so vague, yet the distance is so precise.

Don't bother, Footflaps has it covered.
Curses, I'm watching Series 4 of Mad men at the moment and there's only three to go. If I get home by six I'll be half way through the last one at half eight...

26. This 29er fad will have died out by then.
Brainwave, I'm going to spend the next 16 odd years writing a cookery book.
1001 Cockroach and Cannablism recipes, I'll be rich...probably.
Apparently the date is FRIDAY 13th April 2029. You couldn't make it up.
TV says it wont hit, FACT
