And Maitlis was bang on in her intro, tragic that the BBC haven’t backed her

I'm going to stick my neck out and say that while I completely agree with her, she wasn't being impartial, so contravened the rules as currently written.

The problem is the BBC's obsession with balance, including topics which are obviously not balanced. So that is why any article about climate change has a counter argument from an oil industry funded conspiracy theorist.

Time for some socially distanced protests?
How about some non compliance?

Anything, anything to put the wind up these clowns.

So from this Cummings incident, Maitlis is the one who's been reprimanded and removed from post. I can see impartiality breaches, TBF, but equally she was just telling the truth.

How ****ed up is this right now?

She's literally the only person to face any consequences. Absolutely sickening.

Did she write the intro completely herself? I imagined there was maybe a team of people who are all "to blame" for telling it like it is.

Maybe they've all been given the night off in the name of balance....

How about anyone who tests positive in the new test and trace system lists Cummings as a recent close contact.

I didn't think she was necessarily the author of her own words on the autocue. I thought that they'd probably have a team meeting in the afternoon and prepare a script based on that. Obviously the follow up questions are all her own.

Unless she's taking responsibility or being scapegoated on behalf of her team

Newsnight is the only political show I watch, besides Jon Oliver. Don't bother with the pressers as Tories make my skin crawl.

The newsnight crew have really hit their stride IMHO, it's way more compulsive viewing than the Paxton days. Maitlis, Watt, Goodall and Barnett are all excellent and fairly balanced as well as sharp and incisive, although obvs not to beeb standards

I’m not expecting Barnett on anytime soon now either. She’s impartial in the ‘wrong’ way as well.

Self censoring is the new self isolating as BBC gives in to government pressure.

If they protected her it would just bank some licence fee related punishment down the line. Unfortunately the government has the whip hand.

Unfortunately labour cut the bbc's balls off years ago, with the stitched up Hutton report. The Tories have just spent the past 10 years surfing the wave of the previous administrations stupidity.

A really (un) surprising point for me on the liaison committee (and I suppose not strictly Dominic Cummings, should be in the Boris! Johnson! thread...was that he didn't even know about his own Immigration policy. Timms was grilling him about an immigrant family who've accepted the NRPF (not recourse to public funds)  rules and are now facing destitution because he's lost his job and what was the PMs thoughts..? well, it appeared his thoughts were: "I've no ****ing clue what your talking about "

I wonder how many Tory MPs will be calling for his resignation at the end of the week, let alone Cummings' ?

Just been on the bbc website to make a complaint about EM being dropped. Seems they are also inundated with complaints about the show so seems the anti bbc mob are out in force.
Do make the effort to counter this.
Takes a bit of finding but do not register under the 'we are experiencing a high number of complaints about Newsnight 26 May' heading.
You need to dig deeper to find the complaints bit.

Hardly any because they've figured out that credibility doesn't matter any more. Three word slogans and appealing to people's worst inner instincts is far more effective.

We are getting the politicians we deserve. Yay us.🙄

Also submitted a complaint. How any non-prostituted journalist can keep their cool whilst crooks like Bridgen use them to gaslight the nation is beyond me...

Three things stood out for me about the Televised Oversight committee meeting this afternoon.
Boris doesn’t react well to being questioned by women, in full gobble mode when asked about women giving input to guidance
He said he had been banned from setting targets- said as a joke but perhaps quite revealing- who banned him DC perhaps?
But most of all- he doesn’t read the science briefings

Much to my surprise, Pauline Latham, Tory MP for Mid Derbyshire, has issued a statement that she has written to Boris saying Cummings should go.

Also submitted a message of support for Maitlis.
It may not make a lot of difference but anything that helps offset the anti free-press bilge from the tories and their allies has got to be worth a try.

Why would he? He doesn’t formulate policy, Cummings does.

Sent a message in support of Maitliss

Preston opened with quite a good mocking of Cummings

This was followed by piss boiling evasion by Matt Hancock

Johnson is so plainly terrified of losing Cummings that it's amazing

I am quite depressed tbh

the same lying $©$÷® that screwed up the begining of this crisis are going to make an even bigger fist of the rest of it & there's a brutal recession coming , which I have no faith whatsoever these shysters can deal with either

Even Uncle Fester is getting in on the act! I used to hold nothing but the utmost contempt for him, but it's strange how you begin to yearn for the heady days of unchecked capitalism when the current Neo-Fascist regime is really stretching the realms of the believable, including silencing our media!

Sadly, my MP, a certain Robin Walker, is the very worst kind of Tory... One not good enough, or important enough to actually make it into the cabinet, but he is full of the same trite bullshit and spends every waking hour making sure the powers that be know which side his bread is buttered! Useless shit...

Hats off to Dublin Airport

That's Brilliant! 😂

I don’t think I’ve ever seen such so much online ridicule than the eye test jibes, everyone’s riding that bandwagon hard.

I think Boris is riding a losing horse in this race though and Dom has totally misread the people and his own importance.

It’s actually quite ironic as Cummings has been hoisted by his own petard.

The only win for Boris is they’re able to use it to crash the Brexit extension and eu trade talks so perhaps it useful for them and tbh even if Cummings resigns he can advise on a WFH role and be paid for by someone else.

He's already being paid by 'someone else'. Either regularly or with the promise of a future payout.

The story wasn't even on R4 headlines at 7am. Not even mentioned obliquely. It is running out of steam just as these shits calculated it would.

If they'd put as much effort into crunching early numbers from Italy, France and Germany we might not have the highest death toll in Europe.

Priorities dear boy, priorities. Sod the plebs, we don't need them for another four years.

It’s just been on Breakfast News.

Roughly, why do you expect people to play by the rules when you don’t?

Hapless Hancock floundering again. Is he the most pathetic specimen of a human being ever to achieve a ministerial role in government?

First wave has but they’re now asking for the people to do their ‘civic duty, right thing’ for track and trace which sorta sets them up for the next fall.

Bravo Mr Cummings, not even a mention of his name on 9am BBC news. It's even sliding down the agenda on this forum, hell, we're barely even talking about him in his own thread. Cummings could have run someone over on his way up the A1 that night and he'd get away with it. What a world we live in.

People keep saying that Cummings has completely misread the mood of the people... You've missed the point. He hasn't misread the mood, he will have foreseen this reaction, or at least considered it as a possibility. He just doesn't care. Whatever the public reaction was going to be, he didn't and still does not give a toss. Why should he? What are we going to do? He's seen Trump set the example: say what you like, evade answering any tricky questions, bluster bluster bluster, sorry that's all we've got time for, and leave. Repeat the next day. And the next. As long as you've surrounded yourself with cowards who will sing the same tune, you're golden. The whole lot of them are a skid mark on the Y-fronts of the nation.

I wrote to Bill Wiggin again regarding the performance at the Liaison Committee asking him why we should trust BJ if it would appear his team can’t trust him not to say something that he could be held accountable to.
I await a reply. Interestingly on his website he now has his office of.. email address rather than his own address as a contact. Just in case anyone in the constituency wanted to email him on the one he had on the site last week it is:
bill.wiggin.mp@parliament.uk

Judging by the talk on a few Facebook and Whatsapp groups I'm in it's been replaced by the news that the local McDonald's is re-opening for drive-thru orders.
