It seems our Border Terrier has some sort of pollen allergy, or heat rash type of thing. It occurs only between his back legs and only when it gets hot, and causes him to lick the area and scratch until he gets red. He does like to drag his gentleman parts along the lawn too!

He went to the vet last week for his booster jabs and this issue was brought up, and the vet was very non committal as to what it could be saying we need to run a course of tests (that will cost a squillion pounds, your right arm, and your daughters first born child).

Before we go down this route has anyone experienced similar and are there any lotions/shampoos we could try first.

Ta!

He's not rubbing his arse - he lays out flat on the lawn with his back legs behind him and drags himself along!

From experience with own dog:

Switched to a grain free, premium wet food. None of that kibble rubbish. Also add a teaspoon of coconut oil to food once a day.

Try dropping a small child's dose of antihistamine syrup in his food?

My Fell x Border terrier gets itchy during the summer, apparently caused by some kind of mite.
A hose down after a walk helps, as does a good diet. Many dog fuds contain wheat of the poorest quality which does them or their skin no favours at all. We feed ours "Lily's Kitchen". Pricey, but stuffed full of good things, and they they love it.
There is a supplement available for ponies and dogs called "ultimate oil" which works wonders for itchy skin.

Half a teaspoon in their nosh and after a few weeks they're cushtie, and a lot hairier!

As a last resort, there's a tablet from your vet called Apoquel. Pricey but fewer side effects than steroids.

Apoquel on our ridgeback/whippet or staffie/whippet or whatever [but certainly nothing with pit, oh no].
She does the sniper shuffle, but backwards.
Off to order the pony oil...

Jake has this he is on prednisone 5mg daily at this time of year right into the winter. I also did what chipsandgravy suggests, it helps a little but not completely.
