Bit of a click bait title, but considering the level of access cars have to phones and personal data, this is a concern

I'll be honest, I expect everything collects extensive personal data these days, it's not much more surprising than people using water.
The car isn't collecting anything, the company simply copy-pasted a standard information disclaimer blurb onto their privacy policy. At no point has a car company ever asked me for data on sexuality so they simply don't have it
Renault were pretty open about the amount of data my car would be sending back, I can't work out how it would find out about my sex life though: no interior cams, rarely connect the phone, don't make much noise during sex... .

The seats have weight sensors to trigger the seatbelt warnings. They can tell if there are two of you getting bouncy on them.
The anti-drowsy sensors monitor your facial expressions so can probably tell if you are bouncy with the wife or girlfriend by how much you smile.
There are audio monitors to increase the volume of the radio as the interior noise gets louder so they can here your grunts/her squeals.

I agree that the connection of the phone to the car is likely an important source of all this data.
It is the 'can we peek at your app and browser data please' clause that achieves this - rather than a interior cam positioned to film you getting down to brass tacks.

Years ago, like student days, I had a mate with an old Honda Accord. The back seat was mouldy from being laid up in a damp garage, the upholstery was all mottled. It was pretty grim.

Nissan earned its second-to-last spot for collecting some of the creepiest categories of data we have ever seen. It’s worth reading the review in full, but you should know it includes your “sexual activity.” Not to be out done, Kia also mentions they can collect information about your “sex life” in their privacy policy. Oh, and six car companies say they can collect your “genetic information” or “genetic characteristics.” Yes, reading car privacy policies is a scary endeavor.

And yes, it's mostly harvested from your phone either when you connect to the car or install the app. Interior cameras are fair game though.

I had a habit of sticking my bag (often kayak gear or a weekend away stuff) on my passenger seat in my old knackered car.
When that hit the going to cost more to keep repairing than replace brought a shiny newish one.
First couple of weeks was fine but then went to visit family and had an alarm beep with a icon illuminating on the dashboard momentarily and too quick for me to see what was happening.
Took a few repeats before I figured it was the seat belt alarm when I was cornering over a certain speed.

I read an article recently where a woman essentially claimed that Netflix knew she was bisexual before she did. It suggested that with enough data (millions and millions of users) you can collect info on things as simple as when people are watching movies/programmes, who the actors are, how long you watch the credits, or even just music included in the programme and not just the sorts of programmes that are explicitly aimed at LGBT+ folks.
With enough data points that can be measured against known indicators for folks that you do have accurate data, you can infer pretty accurately about your users for whom you don't
