And it isn't even a "proper" walker, just an old man in the park out with his two dogs. While walking my dog in the park a cyclist cycle past on the path and the old man immediately tries to persuade me that the cyclist is riding an illegal bike, because he hasn't got a bell! I gently put him right and then he starts moaning that cyclist shouldn't be on the towpaths without a permit and then they have to have a bell. I don't argue with him anymore and he moves on to complain about horses straying off the path and going into the park at the far end which is terrible! Complaint after complaint...all while one of his dogs are walking loose around the entire BMX track no doubt laying little messages along the way! I should have complained I suppose!

He's an old man. He is therefore allowed to complain as much as he likes! He probably fought for your freedom in the war, init.

I feel a bit sorry for people who get to that age and feel the need to complain constantly, must be hell living every day with nothing positive in your life.

Yep I agree. On the plus side, they seem to enjoy coming to a mountain bike forum to air their incessant complaints. And it keeps me amused.

Typical.

They would definitely be complaining if none of us did any exercise and we turned into the cruise ship passengers from the film Wall-e.

In the BMX track you mention, there is a notice board up stating that dogs must be on a lead and must not foul that area of the park.

Even when we cyclists use a bell, the old dears can't hear it.

I'd be moaning if I had to speak to you too.

I was called a 'four eyed c...' by an elderly gentleman once.

I dared to squeeze past him...I had said excuse me a few times and he ignored me (i know this because he turned round the first time to see who it was). Then I thought sod it and squeezed past him.

He then launched into a series of shouting, swearing and insulting. Mostly based around the premise that I should have a bell. He squared up to me and told me "I'm 79...what are you going to do? Hit me?".

That's when he came out with the four eyed comment.

Not much I could do other then tell him I'll check the local obituaries as I'm looking forward to when he dies (bit mean but never mind). Then he told me he knew where I lived (I was about 30 miles from home), and that his sons, who he told me were a lot bigger than I am, will be round to 'get me' (I'm 6'2 and 14 stone - so they must have been man mountains).

Haven't been visited by any angry giants yet though.

FTFY.
The scheme was stopped cos virtually no-one knew about them, they were free so weren't making British Waterways any money and there was never anyone to inspect them even if you did have one.
About the only thing it was useful for was shoving in the faces of moany old gits just to say "look I've got a permit". I had one ages ago but soon lost it.

"Used to" as of when? Was it repealed recently?

Either way, how did the moaner know that the cyclist didn't have a permit?

We weren't actually on a towpath, but that didn't stop the old man moaning about it! What amazed me was that he had time to see that the cyclist didn't have a bell! I have to say the rider was going well too fast for me to both spot the make of the bike as well as try and get a glimps of the accessories on his handlebars!

Can't win with the crotchety oldsters. A couple of weeks ago I passed an old woman on the tow path, had been behind for a little while waiting for a nice wide bit to pass, rang bell, shouted "Passing on the right!" ... old dear then had a go about "Don't people use bells any more!" ...

How about ... GET A HEARING AID!
