[Closed] Does anyone here run RC Cars?

I've still got my old Hyper 7. Fired it up for the first time in years a few weeks back, but got a bit over enthusiastic with the throttle and threw a conrod

£50! for a new rod

I have an hpi mt2. Its very good at shaking itself to bits, and annoying people with the noise. Given the choice again i'd go electric and rwd.

I used to mess about with them.

Turn on the transmitter before the car.
Check frequencies if others are in the area.
Get a few batteries.
Make sure you buy a model that's well supported with readily available spare parts.

I used to have a Hyper7, loads of trick kit. My advice would be to stay away from Nitro and stick with electric. Massive pain in the butt, and stuff breaks *all the time* . Great fun when they are working though (which is for about half an hour after three hours prep)

What randomjeremy says! Works for about 5 minutes before something breaks.

mmmm ... can definately be more expensive than mountain bikes!

If you just intend playing around then great but my lad raced 1/8 scale seriously at national and european level and we managed to spend more each season than you would ever imagine possible (£5-6k a season!!)
Tread carefully they can become addictive! 😯

The Slash 4x4 are very highly regarded and pretty bombproof considering the amount of 'bashing' I've subjected mine to (ooh err!), since getting it last xmas I've only managed to snap one part which cost like £12 to fix with an uprated alloy replacement.
I have only run mine with NIMH batteries so far and it is rapid and has so much grip it's silly, I can only imagine slapping a LIPO battery in there will send it nuts! Make sure you go 'brushless' or you will only be wanting a new motor a few weeks down the line.

p.s the Guys at Modelsport are sound and will steer you in the right direction.

My only tip is don't take it to a bike jumps area and razz it around with your mates. It gets very annoying for people trying to ride there.

I got back into it again this year, for my kids of course, but i have got hooked again.
Bought an Ansmann Royal Flash, and it was super slow, so bought a XE Run Brushless setup, which made a massive difference, however the biggest benefit was fitting LIPO batteries, now it properly shifts.
Just bought a Hobao Hyper ST, which I am converting to brushless, and plan to run on 6S LIPOs.

Any tips for a beginner?

I race Tamiya M05's at a club every two weeks. Relatively cheap (once you're setup).
Also Have a Traxxas Slash for messing about.

Back when I was 15 and had a REALLY expensive hobby, I got a Schumacher Cougar 2000 with the proceeds from a lucrative work experience contract (true) - in a way it was good cos it cured me of my carbon obsession before it started. This baby bankrupted me...

Do the batteries still cost sixty quid?

Used to race 1/10 'leccy buggies a lot, but couldn't afford that and bikes. Occasionally look at getting into it again, but it's not got any cheaper. Maybe a Tamiya Mini thing for cheapness/close racing.

Turbo Optima Mid was my favourite car -- got a Lazer ZX after that but it was so fast/capable/easy to drive that it was actually a bit boring. The Mid was somewhat more lairy and entertaining.

Yep got a hpi savage and my son's got a T-max both cost a arm and a leg to run every time there out some thing breaks. I am thinking about selling them soon as there not getting used.

Look at the ickle piston that is amazing 😀

2 tamiya minis and a tamiya impreza, been surprisingly reliable. the minis really do handle like the real cars they even burn through their front tyres quickly. You can really ruin your lawn burning tracks into it 😀

@thebunk-Batteries still cost £60 but are now LiPo and have a capacity of 2 to 3 times that of older Ni-Cds! Oh, and they weigh next to nothing too. Brushless motors no longer need skimming and have a weird designation of 'T' allegedly a 'turn' equivalent (so a brushless 4T is equivalent to a 4 turn modified(old skool) motor! Mental.
managed to acquire a cheap Cat 3000 and stick brushless into it-amazing.

Actually, thinking about it, I'd want a water proof set up as it's coming up to arse end of the year and I'd want to go out in all sorts of conditions - is there any special kind ofnset up needed for winter RCing?

I used to have a Mardave Mini, it was great fun in the local sports hall where we used to race. Used to put bathroom silicone on the foam tires to make them grip on the floor! 8)

Shame I wanted to get a 4x4 buggy, strap a camera to it and chasethe boys around the BMX track. Not like that many people actually ride there.

Wow, i used to race 1/8th nitros. Man they are stupid expensive. Bikes are cheap in comparison simply down to the value!

I remember traxxas being a bit like specialized. Good stuff, not the best value but reliable and easy to get spare bits for. I doubt you will go wrong with one.

Used to race 1/10th Off-road in the BRCA Nationals. Think the highest I got to was 18th rank in 4wd. Was sponsored by the importers of Corally, Orion and Novak etc. Still have all my cars - Cat 2000EC, Losi XX-CR and all the ones before that. Quit to spend time on my A-levels but when I went to watch some nationals a few years later they were onto some crazy powered batteries. Was still 1700mAh Sanyo SCRC when I was racing.

Things don't seem to have moved on much with the cars over the last 10 years though. They don't seem to be bringing out cars as often as they did.

Have a Tamiya TGX that's hopped up a bit. Not used it for ages though. Might get it out tomorrow night.
