[Closed] Do we sneeze while sleeping? And what else can/can't be done

This question vexxed me a bit the other night.

People sniff in their sleep, fart in their sleep (quite a lot that night), but I've never heard anyone sleep sneeze.

But a sneeze is an involuntary reaction - so why doesn't it work when you're asleep?

Clearly laying awake at 3am was a bad idea as I got to thinking about all the other things you don't do whilst sleeping.

For instance, I've never heard a sleep cough (another involuntary reaction). And my other half said your nose doesn't run while you sleep - but then she laid there all night sniffing cos her nose was running.

But anyway, back to the point, there always seem to be enough Doctors or people with medical opinions based on the internet, so I thought I'd ask......

Having worked nights for many a year in that there hospital, coughing does occur; it's the basic airway protection mechanism, associated with your gag reflex. It gets obtunded by sedative drugs like alcohol and opiates, but you don't need to be concious/awake in order to cough.

Noses do run; the production of mucus in your nose and oropharynx is a constant thing, we only notice it when it gets a bit over-productive.

Sneezing seems not to occur; there is probably some way that the sneeze is damped down during sleep.

I was told by my doctor that coughing was not involuntary at all.

As with that and sneezing, you wake up due to the irritation and then sneeze/cough.

I can't remember ever having sneezed whilst riding, does exercise limit sneezing? (I'm guessing a lot of hayfever sufferers may be along shortly to shoot that one down)

You do cough when asleep yes, I've heard it. Only a kind of uff, uff, thing though, not proper coughing. Although you can be partially woken up by coughing - enough to cough properly and swallow down the phlegm but not enough to be conscious and remember it. As for sneezing - dunno, but cats certainly do ๐Ÿ™‚

Coughing is a reflex. You can make yourself cough, but it's also a very old unconcious protective mechanism.

I can vouch for the fact my 2yo is capable of coughing in his sleep. Does often seem to wake him up, but he does it when he's still asleep (his nose runs as well).

Philly - there is only one thing for it.

A proper scientific study. I spend a lot of my time stalking people off of STW. If everyone can just leave there windows open I believe I'll be able to monitor enough forum members to win a nobel prize.

Thank you.

yawning not about being tired, but lacking oxygen ain't it

Scientists do not purport to know all of the biological mechanisms of the yawn, but tend to agree that a yawn is an involuntary respiratory reflex, which regulates the carbon dioxide and oxygen levels in the blood.

Though yawning in your sleep, is definitely quite weird.

Maybe that explains this thread?

That's what I told him, he said it's not. I wasn't sure what to believe anymore.
