My wife is one of less than 6 teachers living within 20 miles, all other 6 are employed. We are in a village where the school, and the closest other two village schools are having to persuade teachers out of retirement to keep the schools open. Some of the school teachers locally travel in excess of 40 miles each way to work every day, on twisty, slow, bad weather prone roads.

My wife is a qualified teacher (Degree, PGCE, 1st year etc), with four years teaching experience, and five years running a family & young children's centre. She has worked before that as outdoor instructor (with kids) and volunteered since her teens to work with children. Has had continual employment other than 3 maternity breaks. She really wants to work in the local village(s) in early years and the nursery.

GTC Scotland will not accept her teacher status as her PGCE was in early years, not full primary age group.

The only way to teach in Scotland is to re-sit a Scottish PGCE and 1st year teaching. This would mean moving away from our village for at least 2 years if accepted on a PGCE, paying our own fees (2nd course/degree rule), moving again when she is placed in a random school for 1st year etc etc.

*shakes head*
