Do Doctors read results before receptionist tells you the result ?

Phoned Doc to get the results of my stool sample and she said the Docs not looked at them yet, and wont be back till Friday afternoon, so I wont be able to get results till then.

Is this normal ? I thought result was given conclusive on results form and then nice lady at reception tells you...isn't only the doc hasn't read it when its bad news ?

Feeling slightly anxious !

Depends on the format of the results, the doctor may need to analyse what is returned to conclude a diagnosis.

Probably depends on the tests - the receptionist will tell you stuff like cholesterol, liver function etc is qualitatively ok, but won't tell you the details beyond that. If it is for something more serious than I doubt they're going to let you know over the phone either way.

I've seen the results and I'm afraid you've got cat AIDS.

Sorry. 🙁

Have previously worked in GP Surgery, all results need verifying by the GP that requested them or one of the other doctors if GP is away and result is considered very significant.

Last time I had to get results, they said "Normal". No it's not bloomin normal, that's the whole point of these tests, it's never normal- we're finding out just how not-normal it is at the moment. If it's normal, then I'm in trouble! So she checked with the GP and confirmed that it's OK, it's not normal after all.

Northwind's experience illustrates exactly why the dread lord keeper of the appointment book is not allowed to interpret test results.

Long story, but i had a sperm count when i was 19
when i went to get my results the receptionist told me everything was normal, then added "you did have a vasectomy didn't you?", i hadn't,
"oh, i best make you an appointment to see a doctor.... the soonest i can do is next Wednesday"
Never let a receptionist give you the results to important tests, they know nothing about medicine!

Mine have just came back highly positive for IBD which is looking extremely like Crohns.

I phoned my nurse for the results (there were lots of blood tests too). She told me to make an appointment ASAP

The results will say that your Q-count is 37 and your solistic variotubes are 0.65nZ per thousand. The doctor will read this and translate it into "well, as well as being unfit, you've got Cat AIDS."

Or something.

I feel sorry for the receptionist. They probably want to tell you, but have to wait for the doctor to say it's ok. This leaves them between two stools.

So to conclude every test result that comes back is read by the doc first ?

To be fair it was the doctor's fault- he'd just left useless notes.

Ask if you get back the Tupperware container you used for the sample.

Probably looked at them, seen there was nothing wrong and moved on to more pressing matters.

Chill out and wait till friday.

In true Singletrack fashion the topic has deviated from the answer required which is

So to conclude every test result that comes back is read by the doc first ? is this correct ?

To conclude? Not yet. This has got legs, let it run a bit longer.

Unlike stool samples, which should never really run.

Well the Doc seems optimistic that the OP will live until Friday.

(Unless the Doc thinks the OP is an arse in which case he is stalling him until Friday when when he hopes he will be dead)

That's sh1t

This has got legs

Three of 'em, or it's trouble.

We had our son in for a blood test and heard nothing for a fortnight. I dropped in to be told that they only phoned if it was bad news.....

To be fair, I think if they're abnormal, they come back flagged as such from the lab, and they'd be looked at in a hurry. You're better waiting for the clinician to have a look than rely on Mavis on reception's well-meaning interpretation.

When I had a mri scan of my knee this year. I was rung by the receptionist to come down to the surgery asap, told I had a fracture and they booked me into fracture clinic that evening.

My shoulder however, I just rung up for the results (shoulder impingement)

Yes we do. The lab normal values aren't always relevant. We do put the onus on patients to ring up to check. But we chase up anything really bad or urgent.

In my experience Dr's receptionists are dim witted old bags that I wouldn't trust to read the TV listings let alone some medical results!

They seem to worship "Dr" .

One once decided to tell my father, who has a PhD from Oxford that he wasn't a real Doctor. He soon put them right! Loudly, in front of a busy waiting room.
