Hello all

I've seen the strangest things sorted on here over the years, so this should be easy...

My crappy bath/shower combo has, it would seem, spent the last few years emptying 2% of it's contents in to the wall cavity, insulation, floorboards, etc. It's all out now, and I'm going to tidy up the damage and bang in a shower.

Most showers these days seem to have a very shallow/flat tray, so the drain needs to be below floor level. Not so in my build 'em quick, cheap as chips, newish build. The waste pipe sits behind a moulding above the floor. The joists are all perpendicular to the way I need the waste to go, and I'm assuming its not a great idea to cut a 2" (or whatever it is) hole in 5 or 6 joists In a row! Am I missing something or am I going to have to resign myself to a rubbish looking plinth to raise the shower up a bit?

Cheers

Raise the level of the floor in the bathroom by 6 inches, and run the pipes in the space, you will have to reduce the height of the door by 6 inches plus and youll need to duck before entering. 😯

Ha ha. Yeah I was thinking about adding another stair to the staircase, raising the whole first floor, and shortening all the doors; but I'm quite tall. 😆

can you not re-jig the layout of your bathroom?

If you have ripped everything out it shouldn't take much to move some pipes.

I did consider that, but I'd just be moving the problem, as the only place I could put the shower that would help; would then displace the throne. And the waste for that would be even harder to move.

Does the shower have another outside wall you can take the waste pipe through ?

No, but it's above the garage. Do you think it would ridiculously Heath-Robinson to have a waste pipe appearing through a garage ceiling and routing over to the wall (where the main waste is)?

I wouldnt argue but i suspect your garage roof is a firewall if you hve living spce above nd thus it would not be acceptable.

You can get non shallow shower trays. Some come with optional feet and surrounds to raise them up.

You will be fine running the waste into the garage.

Google "Firoblok" its a pipe wrapping for wiring/pipes passing through fire rated walls and floors/ceilings.

Didn't do it myself, but our shower was fitted with a slightly raised tray (about 4") that had a floor level drain. Builder bloke then ran the drain pipe along the skirting board and neatly boxed it in.

All came as a kit, so must be out there somewhere!
