I'm not joking. I really am a WD40 / ducktape kind of rapairer.

I'm trying to help my mother-in-law out. The hinge on the door has rusted itself into one position and the heads of the screws have pulled off. I assume I can somehow get the old screws out. My question is, can I use epoxy to fill in the holes before redrilling, rawl plugging and attaching a new hinge. If not expoxy, what?

Thanks a lot

Remove old hinge, and fill with suitable filler. new hinge in new location, maybe overlapping old one to hide the filling of the old holes?

New hinge

Drill out old hole to a descently sized dowel size , epoxy a dowel into the hole

Attach door as if it were new door. 🙂

Move it up half an inch then you're not reusing worn old holes.

Good point. Maybe you just need to use a thicker screw.

Thanks.

I can't really move the hinge as it's one with a long decorative piece on the other side.

Is epoxy a suitable filler?

You can get proper wood filler. Not sure how strong it is or if it would be suitable for hanging a door from - but using larger screws might also help.

Not really, it would be best to do as trail_rat suggests, get some half-inch dowel, drill out the holes and squirt some PVA wood glue into the holes and bang the dowel in, let it set then drill some small guide holes and screw new hinges on.
It'll be a lot more secure than trying to push epoxy into little holes, and less messy, too.

2 part wood filler is OK, but it looks a bit mullered to be fair. Try to do what the others have suggested.

In the frame just use a rawlplug that fits the hole you have when you get the old screw out. Or poke a few matches in the hole and snap off the excess.

Epoxy could work if you have it already. If you need to go shopping then get a proper 2k filler. Or if you are a proper wd40/duct tape kind off guy then jut stick it in place using no nails.

Is that into wood or brick/screed/plaster/whatever?

if the latter than I would see what kind of a mess you make getting the old screws out then try and fill the holes with a normal filler. Re-drill and re-rawl plug. Failing that epoxy would be fine as you normally use epoxy to bond in studs. Just make sure you give the holes a good vacuum out to remove any loose material. It it was wood I would go with the wood filler and matchstick or drill and wood adhesive and dowel route.

or if you can get the old plugs out without too much damage then drill slightly bigger and put the next size plug and screw in? Provided the heads will go flush enough in the hinge for the door to close?
