We will be in touch
My family and our immediate neighbours clapped alone tonight! Previously the whole street has been out. I have read the reason for not making the clap political, but we still value and appreciate the NHS efforts and i am sure many more people will be relying on them in the very near future. Is it really all over?
The lady who "started" it said it had run its course, so I read.
It stopped here in Spain weeks ago (was every evening).
Run its course.
Zero here this week, and it's been rapturous for the past 10 weeks.
Definitely run its course
Happy to support paying a bit more tax, happy to pay a bit more myself, to see a properly funded and equipped NHS.
Not sure clapping does that.
I gave up after like the second week.
Once was a fantastic idea. Doing it every week felt a bit like virtue signalling so I sacked it off. There were only like three houses doing it in visible range anyway.
completely forgot. I quite liked it - on our street about 7 consecutive houses all came out to clap and then stayed out for a bit of a chat. But I've forgotten for the last 2 or 3 weeks. Oops
It has been waning here for a while up until last week where it was really well supported for 'one last time'.
The street was quiet this evening.
How many of those who have been enthusiastic supporters would accept an income tax increase to better fund the NHS and care sector?
That better funding would include increase salaries for the 'key workers'.
How long before the key worker description is quietly dropped?
How many of those who have been enthusiastic supporters would accept an income tax increase to better fund the NHS and care sector?
in a heartbeat.
We clapped the first week, it seemed a bit forced and a bit of a pissing contest between neighbours there after.
Frankly the job reeked of Daily Mail.
Never did after the first time.
A couple of weeks back I forgot and cycled back into the village at bang on 8.00. Felt like I was in the TdF
The sentiment was there at the start and no doubt many frontline workers felt appreciated. But it's run its course now IMO and one imagines those same staff would much rather see their institution(s) undergo a fundamental shake up and receive the benefits of that rather than a weekly round of applause.
Nope, and I didn't do in previous weeks either. I've been quietly supporting the NHS by sticking to the rules unlike some of my neighbours who clapped every week but still partied on VE day and carried on going into work despite what they do being less than essential.
As for more tax, no thanks, the chance of it going to NHS is low and I'm not sure all the NHS problems would be solved with more cash. Changing social care and properly doing something about the appalling life styles of a lot of people would do a lot to help the NHS and improve people's quality of life.
Out on bike and usually stop. Last time outside the giant Heineken factory. Had to stop sometime.
No more clapping? How will the tory voters ease their conscience now?
Is it really all over?
Clapped out.
I didn't clap once. Of course I appreciate the NHS but I don't have a conscience to clear by clapping on the streets. It is political for me.
In a street of right-wing racists and the Mrs being a nurse we've not clapped once. They have.
I never did it, didn't sit right, potentially patronising, especially once the Tories started backing it.
I did hear it was appreciated tho.
I never clapped. Too busy trying to get my daughter back to sleep after the pan banging and fireworks. I’d gladly pay more tax to fund the NHS though and really appreciate what they do. The NHS saved my son’s life when he was only a couple of days old. Better pay and conditions is what are needed and funding will do that.
Why?
Does clapping help the NHS workers or just make the clappers feel better?
carried on going into work despite what they do being less than essential
Which was well within the rules in the uk.
Nothing round me tonight, has been very loud every Thursday prior. We do have a few NHS staff living here and they've been spreading the word before last week's that it was the last one.
How many of those who have been enthusiastic supporters would accept an income tax increase to better fund the NHS and care sector?
I would happily pay more if it was ring-fenced funds. Could be run like the Police portion of your Council Tax, that would get a lot of support. Sadly we all know they would up general taxation or NI contributions, put it in the general pot and it would disappear into the void.
That better funding would include increase salaries for the ‘key workers’.
Define key workers. That has been used as a label for nurses, doctors, delivery drivers, supermarket staff etc. I've even seen the local Domino's delivery driver with a 'Key Worker' sign in the window!
How long before the key worker description is quietly dropped?
The second we are 'out' of all of this and the new normal settles in. When it comes round to negotiating pay rises and budgets the phrase will be met with a confused expression like you'd just started speaking in Klingon.
Haven't done it apart from once when my kids scout group had to WhatsApp pictures of them all doing it, all my friends family on the NHS don't care about it.
one imagines those same staff would much rather see their institution(s) undergo a fundamental shake up
Thats the lst thing any of us want. too many shakeups wasting too much money. get rid of the market nonsense in England as we did in scotland and just get on with the job
Gawd knows how many "shakeups" Ihave seen in my career. Everyone wasting huge sums of money for little reward. the only one I welcomed was when scotland got rid of the internal market nonsense
No. Too many people near me are virtue signalling to support the NHS in one breath and then declaring support for the current administration. The same crowd will be up in arms at the mention of more tax to pay for the NHS. Clapping is easy and free.
We gladly did for a couple of weeks, until we started seeing social media posts from NGS staff saying "that's great, but can we have PPE to minimise the risk of us dying, please?" The realisation that many people clapping were the same happy to condemn the NHS to years of throttled budgeting left a bitter taste.
I suggest listening to former nurse Dame Elizabeth Anionwu on todays Desert Island Discs. (Iplayer) Properly uplifting, great tracks and hopefully it will make you think about the nursing profession a whole lot more than banging a frying pan.
How many of those who have been enthusiastic supporters would accept an income tax increase to better fund the NHS and care sector?
On the grounds you state? Any time.
Not tonight, Myself and loads did on our road over lockdown though a lass played You'll never walk alone on the trumpet every week which was nice. Though the whole thing did seem to turn into a big 'I'll out clap you' competition with the odd firework being set off ect. We're not bloody American theres no need for fireworks for EVERYTHING.
Not tonight but, I have started going out on Tuesdays and booing for Boris.
Didn't clap once, found it cringe-worthy and insulting.

Not sure clapping does that.
The clapping didn’t happen to make money, it was simply to say thank you. The two things are very much different things.
Whole clapping thing is bollocks. I am non frontline nhs.Ppe not claps
A couple of weeks back I forgot and cycled back into the village at bang on 8.00. Felt like I was in the TdF
Had the same out jogging a few weeks back when everybody was doing it - did a couple of Usain Bolts but God, I wish I could moonwalk 🙁
My wife and kids went out every week, I did most of them. We were led to believe last week, being the 10th was the last one and seems the street agreed as didn’t hear anything tonight.
I have refused to join my Tory voting NHS clapping neighbours Since this shite first started.
Big thing round our way, fireworks, saucepan orchestra, the lot. Nowt tonight.
I'd be happy to see it replaced by the pubclication of voting records, followed by the compulsory tattooing of the word 'Hypocrite' on the foreheads of anyone who clapped AND voted Tory.
Jonathan Pie nailed it for me.
'Don't clap the NHS. ****ing fund the NHS!'
I would of joined in if it was a neighbourhood ‘fists in the air’ Chant of ‘pay rise, pay rise, pay rise’
Dunno. The night of the first clap I was still in Teams calls putting GPS in contact with people 3d printing face masks. I also donated a significant amount of money into a couple of crowdfunding events towards providing PPE. My personal opinion is that most of the popular clap was virtue signalling. That'll probably make me quite unpopular. But I spent a lot of time putting people who needed equipment in contact with those who were making that equipment and my own financial contribution.
Last week was seriously loud around here, just about everyone was out, but I think that was possibly in the expectation that it was the last. Didn't hear a thing tonight.
TBH, I thought it was nice. It's not a choice between "clap, or adequately fund, or adequately protect staff". And I didn't really feel like it was up to the person who started it, to say it was over tbh.
Most of all it feels a bit like another false "back to normal" thing for me.
Clapped the first week, then on the second week I went out with my guitar and amp which just seemed to piss the neighbors off. Stopped after that
Never did, I put it in the same box as a candle lit vigil.
Family members work for the NHS.
The first week I found it quite moving. Once Johnson joined in it became a political stunt. ONce was really nice. second time OK. after that no
Keep up, everyone is caring about racism this week. They will still support companies and vote in governments that do f all about any of it but at least they can pretend to care...
Only clapped once and even that was only because I'd taken the bins out when suddenly it started and I didn't feel like I could just walk back indoors.
It had been waning for the last few weeks around here. Couple of weeks where loads of people were doing it and then recently down to half a dozen households all looking faintly embarrassed.
I was out riding last night so no idea if it happened or not.
wife hates it, and she is a nurse. virtue signalling ay its finest. would much rather she had some PPE, didnt have to re-use the bits she has and received a pay rise at the very least in line with inflation, along with her colleagues.
trouble is we did 'the clap' as our 6 & 4 yr olds wanted to clap mummy
Tories cheering:
We did it a few times, but not the last 2 weeks, feels like it's run its course.
How many of those who have been enthusiastic supporters would accept an income tax increase to better fund the NHS and care sector?
Absolutely, without any hesitation.
Nope, never clapped. I just think it's a sop to Tory voters to make them feel better for having deliberately run the NHS into the ground.
I also think it helps seed the idea that we can run a Health Service on charity and good will rather than real money.....
Never noticed anyone while we were out for a walk.
Not sure clapping does that.
It doesn’t of course not but being applauded and cheered as a thank you was pretty motivational and extremely emotional, seeing a visual appreciation really brings it home.
And I didn’t really feel like it was up to the person who started it, to say it was over tbh.
Self proclaimed it started from Italy there was many people saying the UK should do the same. I do think it probably reached its climax and was ready to end.
We've had rainbows in windows, enthusiastic applause and the saucepan / ladle percussion section for the last ten weeks. Set against a backdrop of multi-household gatherings, driving to dog walk and chit chat on the street with no social distancing practiced. We clapped for the first week and then sacked it off as the hypocrisy made us billious. Bastards.
The worst example was Grotbags opposite had her A&E nurse daughter round in (Covid loaded?) scrubs, NHS lanyard etc. Her daughter was almost taking a bow as she basked in her own glory. That had me reaching for anti-emetics.
I've always hated it. However, my neighbours have started hanging out on the street chatting, someone plays the accordion, with the nice weather it has felt quite continental, it would be nice if that social aspect could continue.
It appears we have a STW consensus (bar my family and I)! I may tone my moment of appreciation and reflection down next thursday but doubt the kids will.
Thanks all
@tjagain I can appreciate that sentiment, change for changes sake without proper direction is just a waste of time, money and resources. I have a number of friends in the NHS (Scotland and E&W) and care sector and I don't think either national system should be coming out of this without serious questions being asked and their respective governments being held to account. Its easy to look down south and shout about Tories but our own SNP administration have as much to be held accountable for and have been in power even longer.
Personally I've never been out and clapped, just seemed a bit condescending tbh.
How many of those who have been enthusiastic supporters would accept an income tax increase to better fund the NHS and care sector?
I’ve campaigned and voted for this in the past whenever it was a party’s policy.
We didn’t clap this week.
How many of those who have been enthusiastic supporters would accept an income tax increase to better fund the NHS and care sector?
Well there's the point of giving it more money and the point of actually having that money spent and managed properly.
I think the NHS, while it is incredible in so many ways, has got to that point where you could literally throw hundreds of billions into the black hole and it would never ever have enough money, there would always be more that could be done.
The genius part of the clapping is that the Government have managed to paper over a lot of the under funding/privatisation cracks that they created by pretending it can all be funded by an old bloke walking round a garden and some clapping once a week.
Kind of feel that ending the clap fits with Boris's "it's all over, back to work" message and that's not something I agree with much.
Loved it. Clapped like crazy. Then my mate was admitted to a covid ward, which was empty except for one other person. The clapping was working!! A month or so later and it’s worked so well, even I can accept we don’t have to do it anymore.

Yup, I said that last night but the more I think about it the more it bugs me.

That's the Tory propaganda machine working, convince the public that the NHS can't possibly work and has to be privatised and starved of money as giving any more would be a waste.
We already spend less, per person, than most 'rich' countries...

No. Haven't done it from the start
Nope never clapped. Too facebooky for me.
Would have had more sympathy if half the folk I see clapping contributed NI payments towards the NHS as well.
Jesus h christ this forum is anything but easy to use.

Every few years for the past 15 or more years, they 'attempt' to make it better, but incredulously manage to make it worse. EVERY TIME
There'll be a mod along in a minute to tell me that there's another thread dedicated to this
Not once, definitely virtue signalling from the start. The first week was clapping in my street, but they were too far apart to hear each other, so the next week they're banging pans. How is that for the NHS? Anyway, I asked my nurse friend and she got very angry, so I was glad I didn't, then I saw BloJo doing it and knew I was right.
I also think it helps seed the idea that we can run a Health Service on charity and good will rather than real money…..
This. This in spades.
The number of people doing stuff (marathons in the garden etc) to raise money for the NHS when they would baulk at any tax hike or vote for a Government to increase funding really pisses me off.
Didn't go out and clap last night, but did for the other weeks. Mainly for my best friend.
Was sick of half the rd using it as an excuse to get drunk, laugh until midnight, let their children run loose (a lovely neighbour had asked nicely to keep it down as her children go to bed at a decent time) and none social distancing.
Nope, never clapped. I just think it’s a sop to Tory voters to make them feel better for having deliberately run the NHS into the ground.
Something like this.
Just not comfortable with it, especially doing it at the same time as a few of the Range Rover / Audi Q5 driving Tory types living nearby.
Wonder if it will change some people's priorities next time they vote though?
Why don't we start "booing for Boris", same time , same place?
Wonder if it will change some people’s priorities next time they vote though?
Nope, this will all be over and as they think their chances of dying in a hospital bed are much lower it will all be forgotten.
