Popped to my dentist this morning, minor toothache, turns out i have a issue under a filling i had done a few years back.

Options ive been given are root canal or tooth removal, ideally like to keep the tooth, dentist told me its difficult to get to and 3 or 4 sittings, i hate the dentist at the best of times.

Looking at the xray, you can see the filling in the tooth and a grey area about half the size of the filling underneath.

Any suggestions? are root canals that bad?

😀

How old and vain are you?

I've had two root canals - not nice at all.
But I'd rather have one than loose the tooth.

1 tooth missing at the mo - again due to a botched previous procedure.

You might as well have a go - better than the alternative & you're a cyclist after all - only pain innit?

Request gas and get knocked out if it's too much torment.

Root canals are fine. The first visit they pop the top off and fill it up with disinfectant. That hurts. Second visit they whip the nerve out. Hurts less than the first time. Nothing hurts after that.

So think of it as two visits, not four.

I had both root canal and tooth extraction recently. Neither are very nice. The tooth extraction was because the root canal knackered my tooth completely. As above, they removed the original filling and filled full of disinfectant, then put in a temporary filling. Unfortunately, the temporary filling then broke a few days later, taking a good chunk of the tooth with it. So ended up having the tooth removed after all. Not a pleasant experience. Would definitely choose root canal over tooth extraction though.

I had exactly the same scenario offered recently. I'm booked in for the first of two 50 minute sessions of root canal work on July 4th. Not looking forward to it but I've already lost on tooth which is only two teeth along so it would leave only one standing on its own.

I waited a bit too long before having it done at which point it cracked and had to be removed instead. Now I'm having an implant to replace it which involves having a spike screwed into your jaw

Sure you don't want to just go get it done?

I've had a couple. I'll spare you the gory backstory, though the second was a borderline root canal / extraction scenario.

After all the horror stories, I was pleasantly surprised at how they went. Sure it's uncomfortable, and wouldn't be my first choice of things to do of an afternoon, but the only painful bit for me was the initial anaesthetic injections (and in the second case the chronic agony that was present to start with). The actual procedure was fine.

I've got one this coming Monday. Have had the nerve removed and root cleaned in first sitting last week (with temp filling over the top), which wasn't too bad at all, tiny bit of hot pain near the end, and stinks of burning, plus infection smell if its bad 8O. Then the actual root filling/treatment to come on Monday I presume It's not really been explained very well to me, all i really know it's costing £98!

Just quite relieved as have been feeling under the weather the last few months(haven't been able to train/race really due to lethargy) , and looks like it turns out it's been the tooth infection causing me the probs. Will be happy to get it finished.

if you think a root canal is going to be painful, you should try the hour of torment I had a week ago of having my metal work removed from my jaw and teeth. Imagine flossing but with wire!!!! Single most painful experience of my life! Turns out after 6/7 weeks of having it in the gums tend to grow over the wire.... OMG!!

Had a root canal a couple of months ago. No pain really. 50 minutes with someone poking around inside your gob with sharp implements is a long time though!

Yep my last filling took a while about 45mins, had to have a tooth rebuilt after an accident. Its a bit odd really, since the dentist earlier ive had no pain from it, and he didn't do anything except xray and poke the tooth.

I have an appointment next week so root canal it is.
