Just seen this in the gruaniad as an alternative to Spot Satellite transponder things..

Not sure what the ongoing monthly cost is though...

Sounds similar to the Garmin inreach system - in the sense that you can use your mobile to create the messages and Bluetooth to satellite communicator to send and receive them - but appears to be far more affordable. A good idea.
