To actually talk about what the original post said, I don't think this is an issue of race. It is basically an issue that with externally contracted workers, the workers are only as good as the quality control employed both by the agency finding them, and the employer employing them.

When the agency doesn't really do any due diligence as to quality, and the employer assumes that they have done, then you end up with a load of useless idiots without the right skills.

I've seen this happen a couple of times at different places I've worked - one time was because the boss decided to outsource a bunch of programming work to India, without checking that the people they were employing had any programming knowledge (they didn't). The other time was when the boss employed some people from Kent (I think, might have been Surrey), without really checking in any meaningful way that they had any programming knowledge (they didn't).

A big problem with outsourcing to foreign countries in particular, is the very same race based assumptions as the this first post, but the other way round, ie. that people basically assume that because they have heard of some good work being done by people from x, all people from x are good workers. For example, there is some great work being done by Indian software developers. Unfortunately, most of the good developers are employed by Microsoft, Google or whichever big company out there, meaning that the cut-price software development shops don't exactly have the pick of the bunch.

Oh, and the other big problem we had with software outsourcing, is the whole hourly rate thing - super low hourly rate, but a level of productivity well under 1% of the normal workers who weren't on an hourly rate - these people would come back after a supposed week of work, having written a lot of code, but without compiling any of it, so none of it remotely worked, or even was worth writing, so basically was a complete waste of time. There's no incentive to do work quickly or well if you're on an hourly rate - in fact there is every incentive to generate more hours doing stuff slowly, and more hours fixing your bad code. Particularly if, like many outsourcing shops, you basically assume you can rip off each client only once before they realise you can't do the work.

Wasn't 1066 last time England was invaded sucessfully not forgetting the Scots doomed forays southwards and the ever changing nationality of our monarchs?

Apart from William of Orange (mentioned by Sandwich), there have been many major waves of immigration since 1066 - apart from last century's arrivals from what were British colonies there were also the Hugenots, Jews, Gypsies, etc.

You do hourly rate? We outsource components, much easier to control. Still, the quality issues etc. that you talk about are spot-on.

I worked with an Indian coder - he would tell off-colour jokes about ****stanis. When he was pulled up on it, he explained that it was a bit "like how English people tell jokes about the Irish and the Scottish". He didn't 'hate' them at all, it was just making fun of national stereotypes. He still got told off though.

He also use to eat entire swiss rolls straight out of the packet, like a chocolate bar. Strange lad.

Fail. Google William of Orange, that was our last invasion.

Never did history at school and clearly haven't mastered the use of Goggle yet ๐Ÿ™‚

I always thought that William was invited here by parliament so Mary could take over from her unpopular dad at the top. Apparently James had burned some cakes or something and and pissed everyone off by becoming a Catholic and asking people to be tolerant and was popular in Scotland and France which never goes down well with the English!.He must have been a mean parent cos even his son tried to oust him too(so google tells me). Anyway we eventually got the Germans in at the top for some of their legendary Teutonic efficiency -is that racist? ๐Ÿ˜‰
