I'm mainly looking for somewhere to store and share files online but I'd like to do it seamlessly like you would with a network drive, not with some sort of naff client where you have to select and copy files manually. However I thought of a dedicated server since I could use it for all sorts of other things - website hosting, email etc etc - I've often fancied such a thing in fact.
I seem to remember it can be pretty cheap too. I think Windows might be nice, might integrate better with the home network... but is it more expensive than Linux? Anyone got any recommendations?
Dedicated hosting is not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, not for home use anyway. What about a NAS device you can access from the web? Or one of the cloud services like Live Mesh or Humyo?
it's so un-cheap I just have my own server running behind my broadband.
have a look at dropbox.com - folders appear on your desktop but you can share/store them 'in the cloud' as well.
Or one of the cloud services like Live Mesh or Humyo?
Ehh?
Btw having a server running on your broadband is fine unless a) you want to download something from it (our home BB upload speed is only like 256kbps) or b) someone burgles your house and nicks your computer 🙂
It's for some home and some sort of work use tho. Work files and possibly some work related website projects. I see some virtual servers for like £20/mo which is acceptable I guess as a company expense.
Oh that Live Mesh thing looks good.....
