Had some unfortunate events of late in my family, won't dwell on them, but we've told the bank that this member of the family has died & so they 'closed' the account.
Trouble is we have a cheque coming in the name of the deceased. What do we do with it? We can't put it into any of our accounts, but as the account has been closed, what do we do with it?
The bank account was closed even though this question was being put to them... bloody helpful of them
(it might be legal requirement maybe but even so..)

I think the executor needs to set up an executor account (need probate cert), then you should be able to pay the cheque into that.

I am not a financial advisor!

Pass it on to whoever the executor of the estate is. They can contact whoever sent it and get the payee changed.

cheers, neither of the named executors want to be "executors" so leaving us to deal with the fall out... (not that I personally trust either to organise a piss up in a brewery, even if they are really nice ppl)

Err - the idea is that the executors are supposed to have agreed to their role when the will was being drawn up.

Contact whoever is sending you the cheque. Explain the circumstances. They may require a legal document before they will re-issue the cheque though. Having been through this twice recently, you just need some patience and determination.

I take it you are already involved with a lawyer? They should be able to help out/offer advice.

You will have to get the executor of the estate to contact the cheque issuer.
They might request copy of death certificate and or will to show executor status.
Nothing is simple, straightforward or cheap, everyone cashis in on a death, they're like vultures.

I have been an executor and its not that bad. A good solicitor should help you here. Its not all like the TV where there is a room full of people in black clothes...

I guess executors have been asked to do this as the family trusts them to help the relatives, its a case of stepping up in difficult times to help the family imho

Mostly for me, admin and document signing. Talk to the solicitor managing the estate.. they should help with the process.
