So I decided to by a Garmin 800 with the OS map included and thought this will be easy!
I must be getting old because i have no idea how to get the map information onto the bloody device.
All help so so so welcome.

Did it not come with a MicroSD card with the map on? Something like this:

You need to enable it on the device IIRC; it defaults to the (crap) base map only.

Well you put the card in. I think it goes somewhere in the bottom of an Edge 800?
Then turn it on, go to Setup>Map>Map Information and enable Garmin GB Discoverer.

Oh I see. the card comes out of the big card and goes into the devices. Genius.
