Actually, when I saw the other thread title, this is the first thing that popped into my mind. An actual Das Boot failure is the difference in the subtitles and what is actually being said. I remember the BBC version from years age being more accurate than the DVD version, still a great movie though

Spoiler - in some of the outside scenes when the sub is on the surface, a model was used with some Ken dolls (as in Barbie & .. ) playing the crew.

Fact Alert - It is the same submarine that appears in Raiders of The Lost Ark. Apparently Spielberg/Lucas found out about it and re-wrote the script to accommodate it.

interesting that the author of the book upon which it's based wasn't a fan of the film...

"another re-glorification and re-mystification" of the German World War II U-boat war, German heroism and nationalism. He called the film a cross between a "cheap, shallow American action flick" and a "contemporary German propaganda newsreel from World War II".

Yeah, but his opinion is only as valid as everyone else's.
๐Ÿ™‚

It's genius.
I don't think it glorifies anything, apart from the art of film making.

yeah what would he know it wasn't like he was actually there and took part or anything.

Sounds likes a repeated theory from the Sven Hassell conspiracy's!

Was it shown as a TV series?

It certainly was, I watched it avidly on a little 12" black and white in our bedroom.

The book is where it's at, preferably just before or after reading The Cruel Sea.

The chapter where the two Uboats meet in the middle of an Atlantic storm is madness.

I remember my brother and I re-enacting scenes from Das Boot by wrapping flannels round the bath taps and then opening them right up. Truly terrifying.

Yup, that was a stand out chapter.

Never did get around to the film, that's going on the Movie Night list.

Years ago I took mrsH to a rescreening in Piccadilly. She sat through the whole lot and said she enjoyed it. Her take was it wasn't a 'war film'. It was a intense drama about people, how they coped etc.

Deutschland83 starts beginning of Jan if you like good German dramas.

Then there's Unser Mutter Unser Vater.
