I've been out of the job market for a while now, and having given in my notice this week, would like some pointers on how to make my CV better. Fire away, all criticisms taken with good humour. Formatting is far better on the copy here.

--I am electrician with experience in design, inspection, testing and installation, in commercial, industrial and domestic premises. I have thorough practical experience in all types of final installation from industrial to domestic, single or 3 phase, including all types of cable containment.
I have Supervised Contracts for Local Authorities and Universities alongside multiple smaller works for many different Clients ranging from small Builders to large nationwide Companies.</p>
Qualifications

C&G 2396, 2391, 2382 (17 and 18th Editions), 2393, 2377.
Member of the IET at TMIET level.
CITB Site Supervisor.

CSCS Professionally Qualified Person Card.
IPAF 3a & 3b (scissor lift and cherry picker).
PASMA – Towers.
Abrasive Wheels training.
Asbestos Training.
Employment
I am currently employed, since 2016, by a Leicester Electrical Company as an electrician, this involves a large variety of different work, some working alone, but the majority on a site supervising other staff and Apprentices, in commercial, industrial and educational environments.
2016 – 2007, self employed Electrician. Installation, inspection, periodic reports, rewires and additions for domestic and commercial premises.
2007-1997
Employed as a Field Service Technician, servicing and repairing large vending and photographic equipment throughout the Midlands. This involved regular fault finding, down to component level, and repairing the units to get them working again.

Pre-1997. In varied roles in numerous engineering companies, including Electricians Mate.

Seeking
I am seeking an interesting job, which will not be too repetitive. This could be installation work, but it must include some Inspection and Testing, and design work would be gladly accepted.
Full time or a Permanent role is not a pre-requisite, I am quite flexible in my outlook for employment, and will consider all roles, especially those involving design and inspection.

I wouldn't put dates that way round. 1997 - 2007 makes more sense to me.

I would put the bottom 2 paragraphs in a covering letter not in a CV,

As a recruiter I'd expect employment history with most recent at top.

As above, you need to tailor your cover letter for each role; the fact that you've sent the employer your letter means you're interested in working for them....

Apologies, re-read my post and it's not clear. I wasn't suggesting otherwise.

The dates for each employment period should be the other way.

2016 to Present

2007 - 2016

1997 - 2007

and so on.

What he said.

"I am currently employed, since 2016" should read "2016-current" (or -present I suppose).

You have far too many commas.

Feel free to email me the actual CV if you want me to take it to bits.

Being as I've been writing competency examples all ******** weekend, might as well rip someone else's effort apart 🙂

(Apologies if some of it is untrue or just rubbish) EDIT: I also have no idea what a CV should or shouldn't contain 🙂

I’m a skilled electrician and have worked across commercial, industrial and domestic sites. I’m experienced in design, inspection, testing and installation.

I have in-depth working knowledge of all types of final installation, single or 3 phase, including all methods of cable containment.

I have extensive experience in supervising, from small scale builds through to substantial commercial contracts, including local authorities and universities.

Qualifications

  • C&G 2396, 2391, 2382 (17 and 18th Editions), 2393, 237
  • Member of the IET at TMIET level.
  • CITB Site Supervisor.CSCS Professionally Qualified Person Card.
  • IPAF 3a & 3b (scissor lift and cherry picker).
  • PASMA – Towers.
  • Abrasive Wheels training.
  • Asbestos Training.

Employment

2016 - current: Working for a Leicester electrical company undertaking a range of roles, but mostly site supervising other staff and apprentices in commercial, industrial and educational environments.

2016 – 2007, self-employed electrician. Installation, inspection, periodic reports, rewires and additions for domestic and commercial premises.

2007-1997 Field Service Technician. Servicing and repairing large vending and photographic equipment throughout the Midlands. This involved regular fault finding down to component level, and repairing the units to get them working again.

Pre-1997. In varied roles in numerous engineering companies, including Electricians Mate.

Next Role

I'm keen to get involved in design work, but also happy with installation opportunities. If the latter I need it to include some inspection and testing.

Full time or permanent role is not a pre-requisite, I'm quite flexible in my approach for the right position.

CV - document your employment history, qualifications, key skills and achievements at those jobs. Last point isn't going to be doable for everyone and every kind of job, but if you can point out some specific relevant things you've done rather than listing off your job description it looks good.

Cover letter - explaining why you're applying for this job and this company in particular, what you're looking for, expanding on anything in your CV you think warrants more detail.

Expanding on the covering letter, focus on your behavioural traits e.g. flexibility, communication, teamwork, proactive and echo / reinforce any of the points included in job ads

One. There's one ******* erroneous comma!*

*I may be a little stressed

EDIT: And switch around the dates, only just noticed that!

Another edit: Right, I'm done. I've done my four competencies and fettled your CV good 'n' proper. Good luck to both of us 🙂
