So one of the boot strut mounting's on the Touran has fallen off.
Much pulling off of interior panels, then inner wheel arch lining reveals that to bolt it back on is impossible.
.
It is a 'double skin' area of body work it seems - you could reach up from the light mounting area if you had a 50cm long spanner and the kiddy diameter arms.
.
Pile of pish.

isn't there a rule of manufacturers now that says you cant fettle your own car cos our dealers need to make £50 an hour for 10 mins work?

EDIT: I have a new VW

I have an old T reg Bora and when it's solid it's solid.....when something starts to rattle, it's like opening a "pass the parcel" parcel trying to get near anything. VW seems to add something then add another 3 layers for good measure

Problem with this wagon is it seems to rattle more than it should....
We do high miles (05 on 109K), BUT, it just is not as well built as you might expect.
The 03 / 85k Toyota we own has had nowt but tyres, service and a set of brake discs. And it is not like it gets an easier life...

Looking at that Yaris, I'm baffled as to how [s]you managed to break a boot strut[/s] a boot strut spontaneously broke off on your Touran. 🙂

That sir is a great photo!

Got 32k on a 14 month old passat and its starting to rattle in places around the dashboard and the boot area (estate). Just pleased its a company motor and not really mine to worry about cos I would hate to have to try and take things to bits to fix on a budget

Bolt the strut to something else then attach this to the car with some thick self tapers. It'll work, you won't see it and you get to keep your money.

Rivnut. Sorted. And don't use self tappers. Ugh.

Yah, rivnut or if it's a smallish hole, tap it.

Having said that I reckon there'll be a way in, you've just not found it, but it could mean dismantling the entire car.

My Touran is being replaced by a Kia Sorrento 😯

Not sure if this is a good idea, my Touran has been ace 😆

I had a similar experience with my 04 Polo that required you to unbolt bits of the engine in order to change one of the headlamp bulbs.

The main irony of that being that in Germany you're legally obliged to carry spare bulbs in case one blows when you're out.

If the Kia is anything like my Hyundai it's a great idea, no rattles, no problem, just works
Have had Fords (Escort, Mondeo, Focus), VW's (Golf Bora Passat) and BMW's (1 series) before, the little Korean car is far better built than them all

Blimey, I love our touran. It's just so boring it's perfect for what we want. Don't know what vintage the op's is but ours is 53 and seems to be reasonably well bolted together. Plus being that age means I'm happy to bash it to fix it..........

And it will come straight out again.

"They all do that, sir"

This reminds me of my wife's old Micra. To change the headlight bulbs you needed to take the headlight out, to take the headlight out you needed to take the front bumper off. To change the spark plugs you needed to remove the whole air intake assembly and then get an 18" extension bar!

Yes, yet another rattling dash on a Passat. Mines 8 1/2 months old and done 21,000 miles and was noted on the last service. Dealer said "couldn't find anything, but if I book it in for an overnight stay, they would take another look". They all must be stone deaf, it does it all the time.
It also says "check deadlock, see owners manual" on the dash when you turn the motor off, which I did and the manual doesn't mention this. Spoke with the dealer who replied, "they all do that sir".

Chainslapp, "new" passat picked up Saturday noticed the same message. According to VW forum. It's because one push lock activates the deadlocks, so if you leave someone in the car (child i would think) deactivate the alarm but lock the doors they can't get out at all because the deadlocks are activated. It used to be that you needed to double press the lock button to do this.

Although to me it reads as an error message

I read it the same as well, as an error message. Dealer says "they all do that sir"....... Very frustrating!!!!

Possible that the setting can be used to remove this message but setting it for two press deadlock.

Will look at the settings and see if it makes a difference.

Same here on our '61 Golf. Although it's there I don't notice it now but would like to fix it if possible.

My Passat is 6 years old, 93k miles. Dash is creaky but not rattly.

The dash rattle appears to be the plastic cover over the speedo and mfd thing, I've had it into the garage and they removed it and put a felt insert so soften the noise. Lasted a week.
I've got a bit off a business card jammed in there at present, not making much difference.

Ah! VW 🙂

Reminds me of the time I took the starter off Mrs ADH's ancient Golf so see if I could free it up:

Unbolted starter ... engine drops ...

Had to get the jack the damn engine back into place. Why use two bolts when one will do eh VW?

05, and yes it is a very practical and useful (if boring) car for what we need (3 kids+bikes, canoes, kit etc).
Just not brilliantly put together IMO>

Another Passat here and the dash does rattle but only when first thing when it's cold outside, once it's warm in the car it stops, very odd, previous Touran did the same thing. Anyone got a broomstick they can lend the OP? 🙂

meh, broomstick looks like a permanent feature of our car.
Managed to get a proper response from VW UK today - the only way to fix this one bolt is to peel off the whole rear 3/4 panel of the car, and then re-fit and re-spray.
Anyone know the laws on 'fit for purpose'? Seems a design that prevents any replacement of a simple (99p) part....

alfa

on my third here 🙂

When I took my first in for another fault to be fixed there was a guy with a 2.5L 156 just pulling in.

I asked him how many faults he had had, he listed just about every fault it was possible to have.

then he said it was a lease car and the lease was nearly up, and he was going to buy it !

that was my first 156, the second was super solid and I gave it away when it got old to someone who is cherishing it.

now I have GT which was about 6 years old when I bought it, first service bill was large.

had a fault where the electric windows went funny - had it fixed but now the windows, which dip down a little when you open the door, now do random amounts of dip on each side 🙂

probably get another one though.

think one of the rules is not to buy a model within 4 or 5 years of its release.

Ha! Ford Puma front bulb replacement; about ¾ hr, undoing four large Torx bolts, removing grill, undoing bolts holding headlamp unit in place, remove drain pipes, wiggle unit around until it finally comes loose, take off wiring, remove back half of headlamp unit, exposing bulbs, remove appropriate bulb, reverse process...
Comes under roadside repair in handbook... 😯

Rather than a rivit nut - if you can get your Touran in a vice you could friction drill it 🙂

Only vaguely related (but this is STW, so whatever), but has anyone tried one of those 4x4 Passats yet?

vaguley related, I drive a 4x4 octavia most days, I'm assuming (perhaps wrongly) that it will be similar running gear?
