Have an elderly pair of black shoes which are still going strong, except the surface leather is starting to crack. Is there anything I can do about this, or is it terminal?

You can put leather food on them then wax/polish to stop them cracking any more, but there's nothing you can do about the cracks that are there already.

Go onto shoerepairer.co.uk and ask on the forum or check if they have FAQs.
It might be the coating, in which case you'll have to live with it. Either way a well used pair of good quality leather shoes has a certain appeal, a bit like well used bike parts.

I used leather oil as used on equestrian leather stuff, kept my old work boots supple for years.
