Hi guys

I managed to crack the screen on my Kindle yesterday. It seems to be a pretty common occurence judging by all the broken ones being offered for spares on E-bay.

Its just out of warrnaty so it mught be worth contacting Amazon to see if they will offer me a discount replacement.

If not has anyone had a go at replacing the screen in one?

Ta

Rich

I'd chance my arm with Amazon before pursuing other routes. Kindle support is very good.

Also, two year EU warranty on electrical goods these days, remember (-:

Mate of mine stood on his wifes ordered another for her then rang amazon to mention kindle screen crack in her handbag in its case 😳 and was a bit dissapointed. They refunded cost of second one there and then. Support seems to be very good.

They make money from folk buying books so the provision of a replacement device is well worth it for them. They'd probably give them all away if it wan't deemed to be anti-competitive (one of the laser printer manufacturers got stung for this a few years back).

As above, contact Amazon, we managed to break our Kindle screen skiing and they replaced it no questions asked.

Cheers guys,

I had heard they will replace them under warranty so I'll give them a try.

Even if they offer my a discount replacement I'd be pretty happy, it was 100% my fault after all.

I might not point that out to amazon though!

What's the Kindle equivalent for Just Riding Along?

it is a knowen fault on them, if the plastic around the edge of the screen is or was spongy this is a fault from the factory and should be replace F.O.C.
the missus had the exact same prob last week and pc world swapped it straight away.
so get on to amazon they should be more then helpful

Mine cracked somehow when it was in my saddlebag, contacted Amazon and they sent me a new one out no problem ( they did keep asking if I had dropped it which of course I hadn't)

You were lucky, PC world didn't want to know when I took mine in. It broke while in it's case in my laptop bag and hadn't been dropped or squashed. Amazon however were brilliant and had one out to me within a minute of me talking to them. I've told PC world exactly what I think of them and the matters been referred upwards in their customer services department. (sic)

I spilled water on mine - some buttons didn't work for a while as it dried out, then they were working, and THEN some others stopped working and wouldn't come back to life.

I'd opened it up to clean it and sprayed water dispersant in it.

I told Amazon all this and they still sent me a new one for free 🙂

They did charge my wife though who cracked the screen on hers.

Hijack - i want a Kindle and quite frankly can't work out why i would get a touchscreen one. all i want it for is reading like a book except lighter and with more capacity. WiFi at home but not sure i would need 3G ?

I'm on my 2nd wifi one. No need for 3G as if I need to get a book on the go I can tether it to my iphone to download things. Even then, most of the time i do that when at work because I can't connect unauthorised devices to the wifi.

NZ Col given that they really don't last that well I'd only ever buy the cheapest version in future.

Smaller than the keyboard one, isn't it? I wouldn't pay more for it though - get finger marks all over the screen.

You can get a non-keyboard version though now. Same size as the touch screen but without the fingerprints

Partner bought one last month, she tried all three(?) type in a shop, she thought the buttons weren't exactly located conveniently or could be pressed by accident, so went for the touch screen. Though it may also have been coloured by her being used to a touchscreen phone & tablet. I don't believe you notice fingerprint like you do on a colour phone/tablet.. though as she won't let me near it I can't confirm this.. Oh and yes Wifi only, how often will you need to rush download a book while your out and about? (or can't find a free wifi)

If I was buying a new ebook reader I'd look at the WHSmith Kobo, not least because they're cheaper.

(MrStirlingCrispin's Kindle has just died 14 months after purchase so lets see how good Amazon's warranty is, else it'll be a Kobo for her)

Atlaz - my Mum has the non-touchscreen non-keyboard one. It's quite nice, and small, but it's a real ballache to 'type' on. You can however easily buy stuff on the computer and have it beamed via Wifi, so it's not an issue unless you are going for non-PC usage. Which brings me to:

how often will you need to rush download a book while your out and about?

If you are travelling for work or on hols, then fairly often 🙂 It's a one-off payment so you can do it wherever, without having to mess about with flaky free wifi.

Update: Amazon are sending MrStirlingCrispin a new Kindle (suggested there was a battery fault and said the replacement would be here in two days). Excellent warranty support.
