The behaviour started 10 years back according to the farmer. I'm thinking that Trump winning his first term and that other thing that, 'happened over here' led it to take matters into its own hands. Well, teeth.😉
I give you Veronika our next lizard, sorry, cow overlord!
P.S. Scroll down the CNN story for rather graphic 'action'. (NSFW if you work in a dairy.)

I saw that earlier yesterday, and it’s very impressive how the cow manages to wrap her tongue around the handle and then get it into her mouth in the right place in order to grip it in her teeth to scratch the itch!
Cattle and other animals will use posts, tree trunks etc to scratch irritating parts of their bodies, but the fact she’s worked out a way to get at really awkward spots is just amazing, and rather wonderful!
Corvids, raccoons and other animals at least have fingers toes and beaks to grasp things to use as tools, but cloven hooves don’t lend themselves to advanced dexterity!
I thought this was about the brown cows evolving to produce chocolate milk.
Yet some of you ****ers still think it's ok to forcibly inseminate, rip their offspring away and then pump them for their lacteal secretion. Or stand them in line while the one at the front the queue is bolt gunned, waiting for their turn. And that's before we even start talking about the sentience of pigs and the conditions we inflict on them for cheap bacon.
Maybe just maybe, we should give them a little more credit for their ability to comprehend and stop acting so trump*.
*I think is should be a new noun to describe blinkered narcissistic selfish behaviour that doesn't pass any reasonable logical examination with lies scattered liberally to make it alright.
No such thing as a dumb-animal 🙄
Don't they now have distinguishable regional accents/dialects too?

Temple Grandin is known for her humanitarian work in this area, creating a system to minimize their distress in the queue of death.
It's kind of arguable, but I guess it's the lesser of two evils.
The purist wins the Internet today!

Cows are way cleverer than that.
Unlocking gates with their tongues. Releasing neighbouring cows in the milkshed to get double helpings etc. using hand pumps on wells.
They're good fun aswell, love to play.

Maybe I've go the wrong end of the stick (ha!), but if you think the cow is doing some kind of self-pleasuring in the video further down, then you may want to brush up (ha!) on cow anatomy vs bull anatomy.
Cows are way cleverer than that.
It's a long way from using a tool to scratch yourself with, to (say) making yourself some clothes because you're fresian.

I see what you did there

I think Veronika would do a better budget tbh.

To be clear, your aren't wrong.
The thing is we all have to choose the compromises we make in life, some will view the consumption or use of any animal derived product as being a red line they won't cross.
I understand that but where does it leave those that consume eggs but only from free range chickens or take meds that were tested upon animals?
I totally understand if people point to the above as an example of whataboutery and that's fine but it's not what I'm trying to do.
We are all reduced to compromise on our lives, someone will always be able to, rightly, point out our compromise could be called hypocrisy on any number topics but who can honestly say they are without it? All we can do, individually, is to choose where we define our own personal red lines and support causes we are rightly passionate about, which is what you've done. 👍
Anyway, sorry to get a bit serious here and I hope you don't think I'm having a moan at you convert. I'm honestly not trying to do that.
Holy moly, this prediction may yet come true,

Who knows what they get up to if they're horny?
(sorry, I'm just milking the puns for all they're worth)
Poopscoop - Thanks for your response - is was very courteous and considered.
If you live with the life choices I make it won't be long before some £3 rotisserie chicken buyer finds out (we don't all tell everybody everyday 🙂 ) and comes out with the usual "think of all the animals killed harvesting your plants, you murderer" as if it'll come as some huge gotcha surprise. In reality the more you know, the more you are acutely aware of the compromises (or known remaining issues) we all still have no matter what we do to reduce our impact.
What you seem to be advocating (maybe the wrong word - perhaps it's 'excusing') is that because there is always going to be a compromise no matter how hard you try, people might as well not bother trying too hard to set the bar much higher than 'meh'.
'Meh' was probably the default level of giving a **** about slavery a couple of centuries ago, apart from a few liberal hand wringers getting hot and bothered and making their lives harder than strictly necessary with their talk of 'human rights'. I'm pretty confident that with a similar passage of time we'll look back on those who elected to exploit the other animals we share the planet with the same way we look back on those who clung on to their 'essential' slaves today.
Because they lac tose?
Bravo! 👏🏻🎩
I’m going to be giggling about that every time this subject comes up!
Gary Larson did a cartoon forty years ago, which fell so flat he had to explain it to the readers!

Oddly enough there's a 'trail centre' in New South Wales called Cows with Guns. Ironically, very tame trails, built, I believe, by Ryan Gilchrist's* parents.
*2025 Crankworx King and Yeti team rider.
Grew up with a flock of horses on the farm. Basic tool use like this was unusual but not unheard of, and mainly used for escaping.
Surprised it was a cow, tbh, big lumbering stupid things. If we didn't eat them they'd be everywhere.
