From my Steam list

Mainstream

Xcom - get the Enemy Within DLC too as it improves it quite a bit
Batman Arkham Asylum (imo it's better than the sequels)
Farcry 3 - The plots retarded but it's still fun
Assassins creed 4 - It's good when it's not being assassins creed

Indie

FTL - By far the best game I've played in the last year
Hotline Miami - Insanely violent and very funny. The music is great too
Gunpoint - Good but over a bit quickly.
Thomas was alone - It's just nice.

If Red Alert 2 still worked on the newer Window's OS I'd still be playing it. Nothing C&C game that came after ever came close to it in terms of of playability and simplicity.

You mention Skyrim... Did you play Fallout 3? If not, start with that, then move onto New Vegas. And prepare to loose the next-few-hundred hours.

New Vegas is a good way to spend a few [s]hours[/s] days, just with trying to find everything and complete things. Then you can go an do the whole thing again as evil.

How about Civilisation? Civ 5 is new and should be able to fill up the days.

Final Fantasy 7

It's not very redone... But still, yeah. Best game ever.

If you've got bored of skyrim, don't go directly to fallout 3, it's the same game only (potentially) even duller.

Company of Heroes, since you like total war? It's tactical rather than strategic, but on the plus side, doesn't have the terrible endgame of every TW game ever.

Dishonored is a good shout - enjoying that at the moment.

First Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite

And a must play - get hold of System Shock 2 from GoG

EDIT: Oh, and Company of Heroes - the first one
