I'm replacing a volume pot in a mate's 80s QED amp, is a cheap one frmo Maplin etc going to be durable enough?

Alps pots are meant to be the best, no idea how much they are though.

£30 odd IIRC, well over the top here.

A very cheap pot will turn about 270 - 300 deg. A halfe decent multi turn pot of the correct value will be ok unless you're an audiophile super expensive set-up.

How do I identify a half decent one then?

It's a budget amp.

We always used alps when I worked at the recording studio.

Have a look at cpc or farnell.

Also make sure you get the right one....log or lin, and the right hole size !

If it be a volume knob then it should be logarithmic.

I had a QED MA34 Passive Pre Amp which had an Alps pot which was the point of the thing as nothing much else to it.
