The beasts are heavy chewers and shred these pretty quickly, so I was thinking of getting some rope in and making my own. Any recommendation?

I guess you want the fibres and dyes used in manufacture to not be toxic.
If it was safe for the above reasons I'd imagine polypropylene rope would give better chew resistance than most
