Somone has offered me a contract so I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for insurance which in case I wipe files, knock over the tea lady etc? Always been PAYE so quite naive in this area.
I've got mine with Caunce O'Hara. Not too bad price wise and covers a few extra things. I've needed to have it as a condition of getting a few jobs so its essential really. Never made a claim so can't comment on that but its good peace of mind
Its public liability insurance that covers the sort if thing you describe. Might be worth considering professional indemnity insurance as well but that depends on the sort of work plus weighing up the risks (as with all insurance I suppose)
I've used Hiscox for years. Not had to claim, but price was ok & any comms. dealt with well.
I used QDOS for years, they were fine.
Are you running a Ltd Company or going through an Umbrella? If the latter, they should provide it for you.
Simply Business offers a quick and cheap professional indemnity cover. I first used them when I was about to fit a bathroom in a house where the owner was away on business and I realised that one little mistake on the Friday might mean I was met by a flood on the Monday. It took about 15 minutes to set up just before I left for the job.
I've subsequently used them for landlord insurance on 3 properties.
Definitely worth doing. Just found out that a friend of mine is about to receive a very large claim from his former employer for failures project managing a project.
QDOS for PI and PL insurance (pretty much mandatory if you deal with an agency). They offer other products should you want to cover other aspects e.g. IR35 investigation.

I have a QDOS referral code if you decide to use them ๐
thanks all - it will be an LTD company.
Hiscox - like Rob I've not had to claim, but they seem pleasant enough. I suspect they'd explain how they could help you. Sounds to me like professional indemnity is what you need, but they tend to come as a bundle.
I used Randell Dorling, just because they had some deal with the PCG. QDOS have been good on some other stuff too. Never had to claim though.
But yes... I'd expect whatever contract you sign to stipulate the need for some level of PI and PL (amounts vary so you need to make sure that the cover is in line with the contract, recall a requirement on a previous contract being higher than the default offering.)
