I've started a freelance contract, employed via an umbrella company and I'm taking home only 59% of my gross rate. I've queried it but they don't seem to think their calculation is wrong.
In my last perm role (with same tax code) I took home 69% and when I contracted a few years ago through a standard recruitment agency I took home 67%.
I think something's wrong here.
Anyone else got good/bad experiences of umbrella companies to share?
I'm thinking about setting up my own company.

Go Ltd but check any contract for IR35 "issues".

Umbrella companies will always take a fair whack.
As suggested, go Ltd.
