We will be in touch
We're currently with Aviva for house insurance, but the renewal quote has jumped by £100 for no apparent reason. Interested to see what other people are using for cover that includes bikes?
Pedalcover have always been good for me.
Made a claim a few years back for an accident on a road bike and they paid out for the bike and damaged kit, all pretty quick and easy. The premiums weren't affected when we renewed with them either.
Depends how many bikes you've got. If it's more than a couple then Pedalcover gets pretty expensive. They admitted to me that they couldn't get even close to what Aviva quoted for this reason - the best Pedalcover could do for my 7 bikes was double the Aviva price. Mine's due for renewal in July, I'll have another look then.
I take it you have spoken to Aviva rather than just take the quote at face value? They were the best price wise by far for insuring our bikes with the house insurance
Lloyds home and contents here. Added about £40 to my policy when I added the Rail. All my other bikes at the time fell under their max bike value.
We're with Halifax. We phoned them to cancel the auto renewal and told them we were going elsewhere due to our expensive bikes and ended up with a deal that was much lower than Pedalcover with 3 bikes insured to RRP.
Just tell Aviva you're leaving and see what they offer you to stay.
Was with LV, and now with Sainsbury's. Just tried to add a bike (or change existing value) and they want £4k premium increase.
Try Barclays and Aviva - their home policies are near identical and feature a bike policy that allows you to specify the value of the most expensive bike and all others are covered for up to the same value. There's a reason the policies are near identical - Barclays Home insurance is provided by Greshams which is an Aviva company. Another thing to try is getting a quote starting "today" as opposed to one several weeks out to coincide with the renewal date. We found it much cheaper to start the new insurance immediately and cancel the old one with a refund, rather than wait until closer to the renewal date.
I just saved £350 by renewing with Halifax and adding all my bikes as individual items
Went from Aviva to esure
Aviva were best for me last month. I cancelled my Admiral policy early as a new bike in the family took us over their limit. No such limit with Aviva and they cover bikes in outbuildings and no need for Sold Secure Gold locks for away from home (which Admiral made me do)
Got mine with Bikmo through British Cycling. Not sure I'll bother renewing as their kept in an Asgard Shed and I watch them when I'm out and about.
LV paid out almost instantly when I had a bike stolen.
Agreed value+ all the stuff bolted to it no problem.
The most hassle free insurance claim I have enver made.
Had the renewal through last week for my Barclays one and it’s up by £85 and no longer covers a kayak that was included.
Will be getting a few other quotes in including Halifax.
Pedalcover were a shade more expensive for me but once you add the 15% discount from cyclinguk I found I couldn't beat it for the cover level
Also with Aviva - still cheaper than Pedal Cover for the nine bikes in the family.
Just renewed with eSure. It's gone up, but did a MoneySupermarket comparison and still couldn't beat it without going with companies I'd never heard of.
Previously with pedal cover, but moved when they changed their limits and conditions around bikes stored in out buildings. Moved to e-sure who were very cheap and cover was decent, but had to move following a claim (bikes stolen from out building) and e-sure imposing onerous and costly policy conditions (remote monitoring of house alarm at alarm receiving centre). Now with LV - twice the price of e-sure (I pay about £40 pm for buildings & contents on a 3 bed semi), but better cover and a very good reputation on claims
Also with Aviva, haven't checked for a year or two though, but was by far the most reasonable especially with multi bikes
I went back to Pedalcover last year as their pricing was competitive again - however when reading the T&Cs it states you have to provide receipts for each bike insured (getting them valued independently and having that as proof of value isn't an option). I've long lost the receipts for some of my bikes so I'll be switching from them again on renewal (taking the risk at the moment as was going to be hassle to cancel and find someone else at short notice)
I use Nationwide - if you have something else with them (current account, mortgage etc) then you get 25% off.
IIRC bikes up to £1k are covered automatically, you have to specify anything above that. You can add away from home cover for not much extra.
All they require is that the bike be inside your home/garage, OR locked up to something immovable. No requirements for lock standard or anything.
I had a claim with them a few years ago for a cheapish (£350-400) bike that was stolen. Very easy, just provided a link to an equivalent bike (mine wasn't sold any more) and photos of all the extra accessories I'd added, they paid out no problem even reminding me to claim for the broken lock.
Just taken out a new policy with eSure.
Currently fighting Sainsbury's over a full refund as they have an ebike named on the policy for the last 3 years, having queried why adding a new bike coat so much they informed me the ebike was the problem and wasn't actually covered.
Avoid Sainsbury's.
Regarding Aviva/Barclays, be very careful not to get involved in any detailed discussions with them on number/ total cost of your bikes. I did when I tried to move from the old £3,500 to the new AIN £5k per bike limit.
No idea why it came as news to them that having a policy that covered all your bikes up to the most expensive for one fee might not be the best idea.
But it did, and she told me to go and *****
Tesco's for me. The only hassle is I have to put the bikes in the kitchen if we go away without them. The garage isn't physically attached to the house, it's a massive 1 metre away which changes things.
If you want insurance that will actually pay out in the event of theft etc then it's worth going through the rather tedious process of calling them up. Loads of companies have loopholes which makes the insurance worthless. What is especially annoying is that the comparison websites give you results which say everything is covered
Aviva quoted me over £900 for home insurance with 4 bikes. Seems quite expensive.
Without the bikes it was 400. Pedal cover quoted 400.
I'm wondering if pedal cover would be better? Bikes will be in an Asgard shed.
