am having trouble with connecting my 360 to xbox live via my laptop 3 mobile dongle connection (using an ethernet cable).

the pc recognises that there is an ethernet link, but it says unidentified network.

the 360 starts up as if it recognises there is a connection (it has the circle line spinning (as when loading something, but when i try and test the connection there is no ip address to be found.

also when i try to sync with win media player it doesn't connect either.

i have just bought a new pc laptop (with windows 8.1 pre installed) toshiba satellite C50-A-19T.

any help would be most welcome,as i would love to be able to download updates for my games.

thanks a lot in advance 🙂

Just guessing, but would this need a cross-over rather than patch cable to achieve this, and internet connection sharing enabled on the windows 8 laptop?

are you directly connecting (ie not via a router)?

I think you need a special cable to directly connect stuff (2 pins are crossed)?

As above, you need to plug your PC and the 360 into your router/network switch or use a different cable.

If you're running a direct cable connection you'll need a crossover cable and also manually set ip addresses at each end. IP addresses should be from the valid local range, eg 192.168.x.x with the ip of the laptop used as the gateway for the XBox. You'll need to also tell the laptop to share the connection with the xbox.

It's been years since I've had a laptop/net card that needs a cross over cable and doesn't auto-sense, so ignore that advice.

What's wrong is your laptop needs to provide an IP and routing information to the xbox (or you need to do it manually).

Easiest way is to setup Internet Connection Sharing on the laptop - google will help you here.
