Humax to tv is using hdmi. Put it into tv hdmi in arc.
Tv to sound bar using optical.
What if I connected humax hdmi out to sound bar hdmi in then soundbat hdmi out to tv hdmi in?
Complete novice when it comes to tv's and new fangled stuff.....

I'd say how you have it now is the best option. The tv optical out to soundbar in means that whatever you plug into your telly will route via the optical to the soundbar with no faffing or switching.
It's how I have our TV/PS3/Wii/TiVo set up.
