Typing from the PC in my wife's office as my laptop has got the African Rabies.

I was on site trying to book an MOT last night and things all went a bit odd with pop ups and flash player downloads.

Today the laptop is generally slow when on line, it won't let me start a new thread on here and it is playing random audio clips from adverts for cleaning products!

I'm running a full scan using MSE and it has already quarantined something, but I don't know if this is the virus in question.

As a complete luddite I'm not sure what to do next. Any tips?

Download all the scanning tools from Malwarebytes' tools. Then use them to scan your system.

Ccleaner followed by ADWcleaner, MBAM and MSERT. Then return all IE settings back to default and remove any dodgy search engines and add-ons.

Why would clearing temp files where lots of malware lurk not be beneficial? Also speeding up scan times quite considerably.

Because,

a) it's going to do nothing to help with an infection (and may hinder investigation into what it is / where it came from, if you care) and

b) it has the capability to do a lot of damage.

If you want to clean up crap (and scanning speed is a perfectly valid reason) you're better off running TFC than CCleaner.
