So I've just spotted today the ReCaptcha have changed the text to a graffiti style which makes it effing difficult to use.

See a bikeradar review for an example (at the bottom)

No normally this wouldn't worry me, but I've got a site going live at the end of the month that uses the thing.....

Anyone know if it's simply a mistake?!

Google bought them recently to enhance the quality of their Google Books OCR project by getting humans to type the words which the computer couldn't ascertain. This could mean even harder to read words appearing in the future.

Thats actualy pretty cool!

Google bought them recently to enhance the quality of their Google Books OCR project by getting humans to type the words which the computer couldn't ascertain. This could mean even harder to read words appearing in the future.

How would it work though, surely the idea is the computer knows what the word is and asks you to match it?

You ask 3 people and if 2 or more agree, you accept it. Essentially the same as double key entry.

EDIT: Oh, and yes it will not know if the user is 100% correct the first time they encounter the word, but they will have a percentage of the characters pre-recognised and can do a fuzzy match between the existing data and the human entered data.
