I am trying to get my garmin connected to my laptop via a serial to USB connection. Keep getting the message "Failed to terminate RS232 thread" which i understand to be because other programs are trying to access the com port. How do i find out what it is and stop it?

you need to give pin 2 a good talking too and tell it that if it doesnt get along with pin 5 better by tomorrow you are going to hurt it.

If you've installed the adaptor and driver, then it should have created a new COM port - i.e. one that can't possibly be in use by another app. Are you finding the right COM P{ort in Memory Map or whatever it is you're trying to connect with?

Have you checked that your using NMEA protocol on the Garmin

its connected via the garmin serial cable to a usb/serial cable adaptor. Driver is installed as far as Windows tells me. all settings are done, tried changing it to com port 1 to no avail

It's unlikely to be COM port 1 though as that will already have been installed on your computer?

What type of USB converter? I would doubt you have other software trying to use a COM port. Some software is quite fussy about how a COM port is configured. I use old drivers for my USB converter as the newer ones only work with some software.

Com port 1 is reserved for devices connected to the first physical com port. Try changing it to something sensible like 4

Things like this just make me think bog standard bike computers are the way forward. Batteries last forever, they cost chips and tell you all you need to know.

It should be seeing it as a USB device not serial.

Oats, that'll sort you out, otherwise Wheat is a good un. Failing that Taggart should do the trick.

Hmmm...

Have you tried inverting the laptop above your head and hopping on one leg whilst chanting 'Umbongo, umbongo, they drink it in the congo' backwards?

That usually works for me.

Edit: Probably best to disconnect the garmin during this phase...

2 explorers get lost in the jungle and chance upon a vicious tribe. As outsiders they are given a choice of Umbongo or death

The 1st explorer chooses Umbongo and is then gang humped by the entire tribe.

The 2nd explorer chooses death, to which the tribe start exciredly chanting 'Death by Umbongo, death by Umbongo'

Just checked everything on my setup.

Anquet sees the GPS on COM3 and is configured to use the Garmin protocol

The GPS (Geko in my case) is also set up to use the Garmin protocol

COM3 is set up as 9600,8,N,1

ROFL,

you total n00b, you need to be 1337 to hax0r teh gps.

I shall use traditional voice communication methods to rendezvous with you so I can come and sort you out, and then your gps 😉

Honestly, twas working fine when I had it! ;)))) (no, really, it was!)

Will prob come over to yours with my laptop - or meet you at chez iso25 for a glass of port/red and resolve it for yooohoooo
