As the title really, its females who want to start riding a bike and think itas a good idea to ask me. I have no idea what bikes are available i would of thought a cross bike type thing so they can go down canal paths etc. tbh as soon as it rains these bikes will most likely be in the tip.
Thanks for any help
road.cc have an article and suggestions at that price
As said - a day or two of wet weather will quench their enthusiasm.
That. Paulscycles always has well priced starter bikes on offer ..
Decathlon Fit or Triban well beat that budget for a beginner. £300ish plus.
Decathalon for a BSO. Rode to work on mine this morning, for £500 I could've bought two of them.
Thanks folks, ive emailed them with the details.
Job done!

or they could join a club, learn to ride in a group and maybe enter a few criteriums ....maybe an audax or etape

Could mean so many different things.
As 'cycle geeks' our first instinct is something 'sport' shaped to be ridden in bike specific gear, be that on or off road. This might be the answer but it could just as easily be a dutch style bike setup for riding around in 'normal' clothes in comfort. IMO this is a better option for so many as a replacement for getting about by car/public transport as it naturally fits into their lives more simply - i.e. it might actually get used.

Agreed. You might be thinking:

That first one has really badly balanced wheels. One side is "lightweight" and the other is "most lightweight."

In fact it's so lightweight that it doesn't touch the ground.
They must fill the tyres with helium or something.
BTW OP, I think both of those are perfectly valid options - but obviously have very different intended purposes. A good test might be to simply show them both images and see which one they like the look of.
I'd always recommended the cheap blue alloy Ribbles Winter Audax things as they seemed phenomenal value for money based on the kit...I had not however ridden one but thought they must be alright given the number that you see about. Anyhow, I bought a full bike secondhand at the weekend as I wanted the campag kit that was on it, anyhow I rode the bike for the first time last night and found it comfy enough, a relaxed ride thanks to the geometry and light enough.

They weigh a ton.
For sub £500 I'd send them to decathlon. See loads of Btwins around here, they look the part and get good reveiws.
I love Decathlon, but the Triban does not come in a women's specific design which made it unsuitable for mrs captain slow
Blatant plug. My Giant Defy it's small 😀
Boardman surely?
Been riding a Triban 5 for about 5 months now and it's great, £430! can't go wrong.
Wouldn't the correct response to 'the females' been to say sorry I really do not have a clue?
EBay. In the autumn.
Does a Specialized Dolce no longer fit the requirements for a lady's entry road bike ? It did a few years back.
Is the £500 budget to do with cycle to work scheme?
