Last week there was a huge fire...4100 hectares!

Last couple of nights we've been preparing to get out of town. Big fire locally. Heavy smoke. Wind. 35c heat. Sirens, helitac bombers, c130 bomber. 150 fire-fighters plus vollies. Bit hectic.

https://www.perthnow.com.au/wa/bushfires/warnbro-bushfire-smoke-alert-as-dfes-warns-of-possible-threat-to-lives-and-homes-c-21165623

Yesterday I had to drop my car at the garage and cycle home. Silly idea, hard to breathe and I stank of smoke when I got in.

Local train station out of action. Train line closed. Roads closed. But seems to be easing. Large salt flats have been burnt and there are warnings that unexploded ordnance from ww2 posing big risk.

Ember attacks ahead of the fire. Have to turn off air con. Possible wind direction could change. I'd be amazed if the local NYE fireworks will go ahead.

How's your NYE going?

Just back from a ride in 30+ heat.

We’ve had reasonable rain so far this summer though so the fire risk isn’t high … currently at least.

Good luck!

Yeah we had a wet spring so there's heaps of fresh fuel. They never seem to do enough burn off's. Being in the coast, wind is a huge issue and the sudden changes of direction. Advice for next suburb is prepare to defend or leave now.

Amazes me that people are spectating, driving to the fires to watch it. Taking kids to see. Flying drones too. Idiotic.

Melbourne here, there is a lot of growth which is still green at the moment. Now the poor weather has finally broken its going to be drying out rapidly. I suspect a bad fire season ahead.

I did an Indigenous tour of Kings Park a decade ago and the tour guide told us that the burn offs were really badly timed around Perth. Far too late in his opinion … which he said was based on his people’s traditional practice.

Meanwhile, cyclone watch up the coast.

Nice night for a ride here in Hobart with a top of 19ºc. But yeah, bushfires are always at the back of my mind.

There are still scars on the road outside my house where a bus burned out in the big fire of 67.

Stay safe out there & happy new year.

big fire of 67.

How much of a new thing are the fires? Is it the regularity that's new?
